Iowa Goes Out With a Bang
DES MOINES, IA - The Iowa Cubs took the lead with four runs in the fifth and never let down as they defeated the Colorado Springs Sky Sox (67-71) 12-3 to finish 2016 with a 67-76 record. Iowa executed the series sweep in its final home set for the fourth straight season.
Six I-Cubs tallied multiple hits in the game and five managed multiple RBI. Jordan Pries (7-3) posted a quality start to earn the win and the bullpen combined for a shutout relief effort.
The Sky Sox were on the board first for the first time in this series. A towering home run from Ramon Flores to left-center gave Colorado Springs a 1-0 edge after three.
Iowa took the run back in the fourth on consecutive singles from Tim Federowicz, Taylor Davis and Kristopher Negrón.
Colorado Springs broke the tie immediately, plating two in the top of the fifth on RBI hits from Andrew Susac and Flores.
The I-Cubs got hot in the fifth and took their first lead of the game with four runs in the inning. John Andreoli got the effort going with a leadoff walk and the run scored on a Jeimer Candelario single. Federowicz, Davis and Negrón each collected RBI in the frame as Iowa jumped ahead 5-3.
The lead was secured in the sixth with another pair of runs and the I-Cubs piled on five more in the eighth. Nine batters went to the plate in the inning and Iowa drilled five doubles for an offensive explosion to cap the season.
