Kernels Pop Captains Winning Streak, Ends at Five Games

(EASTLAKE, OH) - The Lake County Captains (67-49) were held to just one run and three hits by Cedar Rapids Kernels (69-49) pitching in what was a 5-1 Kernels win on an overcast Friday night at Classic Park.

Rodney Boone was solid over five innings. The left-hander earned three strikeouts over his first two frames.

In the third, Willie Joe Garry Jr. doubled with one out and was plated on an RBI groundout. In the fifth, Garry Jr. would launch his second home run of the season a 427-foot blast over the right field fence. Boone ended his fifth, forcing a 6-4-3 double play and getting his sixth strikeout.

Lake County offensively only managed one hit, an infield single, over the first five innings against David Festa. The sixth was the first time the Captains had two runners reach, on a hit by pitch and an infield single from Micael Ramirez. With two outs, Matt Mullenbach finished the inning for Cedar Rapids forcing a fielder’s choice.

The Kernels tacked on two additional runs a sacrifice fly in the sixth and in the seventh off a throwing error from Elvis Jerez. Davis Sharpe and Alaska Abney completed the day on the mound combing for three innings and allowing no baserunners.

Alexfri Planez provided the lone tally for Lake County, a solo home run onto the right field lawn, his 18th on the year. He is active leader for the Captains. Bobby Malacki for the Kernels collected four strikeouts and allowed just the homer in the ninth.

Game five of the six game set is tomorrow Saturday, August 27th, with first pitch at 6:35 p.m. The first 1000 fans, will receive a Bobby Bradley Jersey presented by University Hospitals.
