In this Pork Barrel Blog, IronPigs media assistant Pat McCarthy takes a look at the results from the Arizona Fall League and the various winter leagues for players that could be members of the IronPigs roster at some point during the 2018 season.
Arizona Fall League:
C Edgar Cabral : Selected in the 11th round of the 2015 draft by the Phillies, Cabral split the 2017 season between Single-A Lakewood and Advanced-A Clearwater. Cabral had a very successful fall for the Desert Dogs; in 14 games, he hit .298 with four extra base hits and four RBI.
OF Cornelius Randolph: The Phillies' first-round pick in 2015 spent the entire 2017 season with Clearwater. In 122 games with the Threshers, he hit .250 with 13 home runs. Currently the Phillies number 13 prospect according to mlb.com, Randolph hit .239 with 17 hits during the Fall League in 19 games.
LHP Elniery García : The 23-year-old made his Triple-A debut in the IL playoffs, starting Game 2 of the Divisional Playoffs against Scranton (L, 5.0 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 4 ER, BB, 6 K). Signed by the Phillies as an international free agent in 2012, the Dominican Republic native got a late start in 2017 due to an 80-game suspension for testing positive for a performance-enhancing drug. Garcia pitched well in five starts with Reading, going 2-1 with a 1.75 ERA before joining the IronPigs. In four starts with Glendale, the southpaw went 1-2 with a 5.79 ERA.
RHP J.D. Hammer : A 24th round pick by the Rockies, Hammer was acquired at this summer's trade deadline from Colorado for Pat Neshek. Hammer hit the ground running with the Threshers; in 15.2 innings he posted a 2-0 record and a sparkling 0.66 ERA while striking out 20. That same success continued in the AFL, as Hammer allowed just four hits and struck out 11 with a 0.66 ERA over 10 games.
Dominican Winter League:
OF Roman Quinn: The Phillies 11th overall prospect was back on the field this winter after missing most of the 2017 season due to an elbow injury sustained during his time with the IronPigs. Quinn played in six games for the Toros del Este and hit .125 in 16 at bats.
LHP Franklyn Kilomé: The 22-year-old was scheduled to make his Triple-A debut in Game 5 of IL Divisional Playoffs, but the RailRiders closed out the IronPigs in four games. Most of his 2017 season was spent with Clearwater, where he was an impressive 6-4 with a 2.59 ERA in 19 starts. He then held his own in five starts with Reading (1-3, 3.64). A member of the Phillies' 40-Man Roster, Kilome went 0-4 with a 7.64 ERA over six starts for Leones del Escogido this winter.
RHP Seranthony Domínguez: Signed back in 2011 out of the Dominican Republic, the 23-year-old was added to the Phillies 40-Man Roster protecting him from the Rule 5 Draft. Dominguez is likely to start the 2018 season in Reading after going 4-4 with a 3.61 ERA in Clearwater. Coming out of the pen this winter for Gigantes del Cibao, Dominguez went 1-0 with a 4.91 ERA while striking out eight batters in seven innings.
Venezuelan Winter League:
OF Jiandido Tromp : Tromp had a brief stint in Lehigh Valley last season appearing in three games but spent a majority of his year in Reading. Tromp is averaging an impressive 17 homeruns over the last three seasons and led the FIghtin' Phils in extra base hits in 2017. In 11 games this winter, Tromp posted a .313 OPB and scored a pair of runs for Naveganttes del Magallanes.
Liga Mexicana del Pacifico:
INF Mitch Walding: Walding joined the IronPigs during the IL Playoffs after spending the entire season in Reading -- where he was an Eastern League All-Star and slugged over 25 home runs. This winter, the former fifth-round pick batted .228 with three home runs and 10 RBI for Caneros de los Mochis.
