On Saturday night, the Chattanooga Lookouts defeated the Birmingham Barons, in game one of a five game series, by a score of 9-6 in front of 4,761 at AT&T Field.
The Barons struck first, as they plated two runs in the top of the first inning. The Lookouts trailed for most of the game until they scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. The Barons regained the lead in the top of the eighth inning when Mason Robbins and Keon Barnum scored on a Cleuluis Rondon double to left field. In the bottom of the eighth inning, the Lookouts bats caught fire, as they exploded for five runs.
Dan Rohlfing got things started, when he ripped an RBI line drive double to right field to score LaMonte Wade Jr and Jon Rodriguez. Edgar Corcino followed with a double of his own, a RBI double to left field that allowed Dan Gamache and Dan Rohlfing to score. Nick Gordon kept the rally going for the Lookouts in the eighth with a RBI line drive single to left field to score Edgar Corcino. Todd Van Steensel slammed the door on the Barons offense in the bottom of the ninth inning to secure the victory for the Lookouts.
On the mound, Lookouts relief pitcher, Luke Bard, managed to quiet the Barons bats when he entered the game in the fifth inning. In 2.0 IP, Bard allowed just 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB and struck out six. Mason Melotakis picked up his second win of the season for the Lookouts while Robinson Leyer took the loss for the Barons, his third of the season.
The Lookouts will host the Barons in game two of the series at AT&T Field on Sunday, May 14th. The first pitch for the Mother's Day Matinee is set for 2:15 PM.
