SOUTH BEND, Ind. - Minor League Baseball announced Thursday afternoon that Lansing Lugnuts infielder Bo Bichette has been named the Midwest League June Player of the Month.
Bichette, a second-round pick in 2016 from St. Petersburg, Fla., overwhelmed MWL pitching to the tune of 40 hits and a remarkable .421 batting average in 22 games, with 16 extra-base hits and 63 total bases.
The 19-year-old currently leads all of professional baseball, Major League and Minor League, in batting average (.383) and doubles (32), with an on-base percentage (.444) that ranks second to only the New York Yankees' Aaron Judge. He has collected 108 base hits in 69 games, including 34 multi-hit games.
Bichette, the starting shortstop for the Midwest League Eastern Division All-Star Team, will next be taking part in the MLB Futures Game on Sunday in Miami, joined by Lugnuts teammate Vladimir Guerrero, Jr. in representing the Toronto Blue Jays.
He is the second Lugnut honored by the Midwest League with a monthly award, joining Bradley Jones, the MWL April Player of the Month.
The Lugnuts (5-9, 42-38) wrap up a three-game homestand with the West Michigan Whitecaps (10-4, 55-26) tonight at Cooley Law School Stadium on a Labatt Thirsty Thursday featuring $2 beers/sodas and half off craft beers. Gates open at 6 p.m. with a 7:05 p.m. start. Tickets may be purchased at the Cooley Law School Stadium box office, by calling (517) 485-4500 or via lansinglugnuts.com.
