Bradley, Almanzar lead Salem shutout

Two Sox prospects combine for six hits, pitching does rest
May 9, 2012
Jackie Bradley's home run Tuesday must have been loud.

It also set the tone Wednesday.

Boston's No. 19 prospect and the Class A Advanced Salem Red Sox finished off the visiting Potomac Nationals, 10-0, resuming in the fifth inning a suspended game from the day before.

Bradley smacked a leadoff homer to kick-start the Red Sox's six-run first inning. Michael Almanzar collected the first of his three doubles in the eventful frame.

All told, Bradley went 2-for-3 to raise his early batting average to .375, while Almanzar, a 21-year-old corner infielder coming off a disappointing 2011, went 4-for-5 to increase his mark to .292.

Red Sox starter Miguel Celestino struck out a pair over four one-hit, scoreless innings Tuesday. His lone blemish: Michael Taylor's two-out double in the second inning.

His reliever on Wednesday, Keith Couch (4-2), came on and yielded just two hits over five scoreless frames to seal a three-hit shutout.

Both Celestino and Couch registered eight groundouts.

Nationals hurler Adam Olbrychowski (1-4) was charged with the game's first six runs on five hits and didn't make it out of the first inning Tuesday.

Later Wednesday, Salem also swiped Game 2 of the abbreviated double header, 6-2, which was called after 4 1/2 innings due to a drenched diamond.

No. 17 prospect Sean Coyle smacked a two-run homer off Robbie Ray (0-1). Coyle also struck a solo shot in Tuesday's first inning and has four longballs overall this season.

No. 7 prospect Brandon Jacobs went 3-for-3 with a double.
