Bryant, Gallo among May Players of Month

Top prospects put on power displays for Smokies, Pelicans

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Minor League Baseball™ announced today that top prospects Kris Bryant, Joey Gallo and Corey Seager are among the 10 players who have been selected as Player of the Month for May in their respective leagues. Each honoree will receive an award from MiLB™ in recognition of their performance last month. Here are the winners:

Taylor Hill of the Syracuse Chiefs went 4-0 and led the International League with a 0.95 ERA and a 0.89 WHIP. The right-hander tied for the league lead in wins last month and ranked fifth with 38.0 innings pitched. Hill struck out 20 and walked only five. On May 4, he fired a complete game, three-hit shutout in a 1-0 victory over Toledo.

Andrew Brown ended May on a 12-game hitting streak on his way to hitting .358, which ranked third in the Pacific Coast League. The Las Vegas 51s outfielder tied for the PCL lead with 10 homers last month and was second in extra-base hits (20), OPS (1.184) and on-base percentage (.439). He was fifth with 25 RBIs and runs (23). The New York Mets recalled Brown on June 5.

Michael A. Taylor paced the Eastern League in OPS (1.166) and slugging percentage (.720) and tied for the league lead with 77 total bases. The Harrisburg Senators outfielder was second in the circuit with nine home runs and 40 hits. Taylor had hits in 18 of his last 19 May games on his way to batting .374, which tied for third-best in the EL.

Kris Bryant recorded 14 multiple-hit games on his way to leading the Southern League in batting (.407), homers (12), RBIs (34) and hits (44). The Tennessee Smokies third baseman also paced the league in extra-base hits (19), total bases (87), runs (30), on-base percentage (.492), slugging percentage (.806) and OPS (1.298).

Matt Duffy of the Corpus Christi Hooks was among the Texas League's top four players in hits (T-1st, 38), batting average (2nd, .365), RBIs (T-3rd, 20), on-base percentage (4th, .412) and OPS (4th, .941). The third baseman ranked sixth in slugging percentage (.529) and total bases (55). Duffy had hits in his last eight games before being promoted to Triple-A® Oklahoma City.

Corey Seager hit .400 with 21 extra-base hits and 15 doubles, all of which were best in the California League in May. The Rancho Cucamonga Quakes shortstop also led the league in total bases (77), on-base percentage (.455), slugging percentage (.700) and OPS (1.155). Seager ranked third with 44 hits and sixth in the circuit with 24 RBIs.

Joey Gallo led the Carolina League in homers (12), RBIs (26), extra-base hits (17), on-base percentage (.483), slugging percentage (.783) and OPS (1.266). The Myrtle Beach Pelicans third baseman was second with 26 walks and fourth with a .326 batting average. Gallo was promoted to Double-A® Frisco on Sunday. He won the Joe Bauman Home Run Award last year for leading MiLB with 40 homers and currently has the most dingers in MiLB this season with 23.

Derrick Chung paced the Florida State League with a .405 batting average, .482 on-base percentage and 1.009 OPS. The Dunedin Blue Jays catcher ranked third in slugging percentage (.527) and had hits in 19 of his 21 May games.

Brian Holberton finished first in the Midwest League last month in batting average (.388) and slugging percentage (.638). The Quad Cities River Bandits catcher ranked second in OPS (1.063) and had multiple hits in 11 games. On May 18, Holberton hit for the cycle, going 5-for-5 with five RBIs in a 10-3 win over Kane County. He was also among the top 10 players in the league in doubles (T-6th, 9), on-base percentage (7th, .425) and extra-base hits (10th, 13) in May.

Jantzen Witte had hits in his first dozen May games and in 24 of 29 overall last month on his way to batting .388. The Greenville Drive third baseman led the South Atlantic League in on-base percentage (.480) and tied for the most RBIs with 27. Witte ranked second in batting average, doubles (15), extra-base hits (20), hits (40) and walks (18), and third in slugging percentage (.660) and runs (23).
