Chih-Hsien Chiang Honored as Eastern League Player of the Month for June

Portland, Maine- Portland Sea Dogs' outfielder Chih-Hsien Chiang has been selected the Eastern League Player of the Month for June. The Eastern League of Professional Baseball Clubs made the announcement Wednesday afternoon. The selection is made by Eastern League managers, media personnel, and team officials'.

In 27 games with the Sea Dogs in June, Chiang hit .320 and led the Eastern League in home runs (7), RBI (27), slugging percentage (.680); OPS (1.071), and total bases (66). He also ranked among the league leaders for the month in extra base hits (18- tied 1st), triples (3- tied 2nd), runs scored (21- 3rd), and doubles (8-tied 9th). The 23 year-old homered in four straight games (June 3-7) to tie a franchise record. He also smashed two grand slams, one on June 5th at Altoona and another on June 25th at New Hampshire, giving him three career grand slams in a Sea Dogs uniform establishing a new franchise record. Chiang hit safely in 21 of the 27 games he appeared in June, including 11 straight from May 31st to June 12th, and reached base safely in 23 of the 27 contests. He was selected as the Eastern League Player of the Week for the Week of May 30th through June 5th, hitting .424 with three home runs during the stretch

Chiang has been selected to participate in both the Major League Baseball Futures Game on July 10th in Phoenix, Arizona and the Eastern League All-Star Game on July 13th in Manchester, New Hampshire.

The All-Star is hitting .309 with 14 home runs and 58 RBI in 68 games for the Sea Dogs this season. He leads the Eastern League with a .618 slugging percentage and 44 extra base hits and ranks second in the league in RBI (58) and doubles (26). He is tied for ninth in the league in hitting with a .309 average.

Chiang, in his second season with the Sea Dogs ranks among the career franchise leaders in a number of categories including fourth all time in doubles (61), eighth in slugging percentage (.491), tenth in home runs (25) and RBI (123), and 13th in total bases (336).

A native of Taitung, Taiwan, Chiang was signed by the Red Sox as an international free agent in 2005.

Chiang is the eighth Sea Dog to earn an Eastern League Player of the Month selection in franchise history and the first since Aaron Bates was tabbed with the honor in May 2009.
