Gomez helps BayBears even Finals

With seemingly all the pressure on them, Raywilly Gomez and the Mobile BayBears have managed to turn the tables.

The D-backs catching prospect went 3-for-4 with a homer and two RBIs on Saturday night as the BayBears held on to defeat Birmingham, 3-1, and force a decisive fifth game in the Southern League Championship Series.

After staking Mobile to a 1-0 lead with an RBI single in the second inning, Gomez extended it with a solo blast in the fourth. He singled again in the sixth before grounding out in his final at-bat in the ninth.

"It was a pretty exciting moment," Gomez said. "Everyone was excited about this moment. I got a good pitch to hit and I did it."

The 23-year-old New York native has played a big role in the BayBears' playoff run, batting .375 with a homer and six RBIs in six games.

"I just have the same approach, working hard like I've been doing all year. Getting good pitches to hit, getting the bat on the ball," Gomez said. "I like to hit with runners in scoring position. That's when you see a lot of breaking stuff.

"I'm able to hit everywhere right now, just putting the bat on the ball and never put my head down. I'm really happy for that."

After dropping the first two games of the best-of-5 series at home, Mobile has won two in a row in Birmingham to keep alive its hopes for a third straight championship.

Bo Schultz recorded his second playoff win, allowing a run on five hits over 7 2/3 innings. The Northwestern University product struck out two, walked one and lowered his postseason ERA to 0.66.

"He was outstanding today," Gomez said. "Fastball location in and out, he was able to throw the sinker in and out, he was very nasty. I tip my hat to him, he was outstanding tonight. He was able to locate to everywhere I called for it."

The Barons scored 16 runs in building a 2-0 series lead but have been held to one over the last two contests. That sets up a winner-take-all showdown on Sunday in Birmingham.

"We know we can do this," Gomez said. "We have a good team and had the best record all year. We always trust in ourselves."

Dustin Martin capped the BayBears' scoring with a solo homer in the ninth and Jack Barrett recorded the final four outs for his third playoff save.

White Sox No. 15 prospect Micah Johnson was 3-for-4 with two stolen bases and a run scored for the Barons.
