Peña the Hero in Aces Doubleheader Sweep of Bees

April 10, 2011
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah- Wily Mo Peña hit a go-ahead RBI single in the final frame of game one and a go-ahead three-run home run in the nightcap Sunday to lead the Reno Aces to a doubleheader sweep of the Salt Lake Bees at Spring Mobile Ballpark.

In the opener, the Aces clung to an early 2-0 lead until the fourth, when Salt Lake's Alexi Amarista tied the game with a two-run shot to right. The game would stay knotted until the seventh, when Peña singled up the middle, chasing home Tracy with the would-be game-winning run in a 3-2 Aces victory.

Josh Collmenter (1-0) allowed just two runs-one earned-on two hits with seven strikeouts to earn the win. Jordan Norberto tossed a scoreless seventh to collect the save. The loss fell to Salt Lake starter Eric Junge, who surrendered three runs on five hits over 6.2 innings of work.

In the back-end of the double-dip, the game again was knotted at two through four innings. With two on and two out in the fifth, Peña came to the plate and deposited an Anthony Ortega offering deep over the left-field wall, giving the Aces a lead they would not relinquish in an 8-3 Reno win. Brandon Allen followed Peña with a solo homer of his own, and Cody Ransom added a solo home run in the sixth.

Zach Kroenke (1-0) earned the win in game two, scattering three runs on nine hits over 5.1 frames. Former Bee Rafael Rodriguez kept Salt Lake at bay over the final 1.2 innings. Ortega (0-1) was pinned with the loss after allowing four earned runs in his lone inning of work.

The Aces now head to Colorado Springs to begin a four-game set with the Sky Sox. Monday's first pitch is set for 5:05 p.m. PT. RHP Matt Torra (0-0, No ERA) gets the nod for Reno in the opener, while Colorado Springs counters with LHP Josh Muecke (0-0, No ERA).
