Report: Red Sox prospect Denney arrested

Boston's third-round pick in 2013 Draft had suspended license
March 14, 2014

Red Sox Minor Leaguer Jon Denney, the team's third-round pick in last year's Draft, was arrested and charged with driving with a suspended license early Thursday morning in Fort Myers, Fla.

Denney, 19, was stopped by police at 11:57 p.m. Wednesday night, according to a Lee County Sheriff's Office arrest report obtained by Yahoo Sports. Cops, who said they observed Denney driving erratically in his Ford F-150, said the Boston prospect presented them with a license that was restricted for business and emergency purposes after a DUI arrest in Arkansas.

Asked by police why he was driving through the Fort Myers Beach area, Denney replied, "Partying and looking to get some [expletive]," according to the report.

Denney was given a citation and got a ride home from a friend, although his night wasn't over -- about two hours later, police said they observed Denney getting back into his pickup truck and driving out of a parking lot.

Upon being pulled over by police, he told officers he was giving a ride to a woman. "Denney then became belligerent and started to cuss," the report said. According to Yahoo, the police report stated Denney told officers "he was a Boston Red Sox player and he didn't care [sic] he had money and made more money than we would ever see."

Denney, who was arrested at 2:22 a.m., added "he would be out in no time because of who he played for and that he made three million a year."

Denney was taken to the Lee County Sheriff's Office at 4:06 a.m. and was released at 8:30 a.m. after posting a $500 bond.

The Red Sox, who hold Spring Training in Fort Myers, issued a statement to Yahoo Sports: "The Red Sox are aware of the incident involving Jon Denney. At present, we are still gathering more information. At this time the club will make no further comment."

Denney was considered one of the biggest steals of the 2013 Draft after slipping to the third round, when the Red Sox drafted him at No. 81 overall. Widely speculated to be a first or second-round pick, Denney ended up signing with Boston on June 21, 2013 and received an $875,000 signing bonus.

He spent his first season in the Minors with Boston's Rookie-level Gulf Coast League affiliate, batting .203 with no home runs, two RBIs, a pair of steals and a .379 on-base percentage in 26 games.
