After putting up their first runs on mechanical and mental mistakes by the Muckdogs, the Doubledays came alive in a big way to wrap up their quick two-game road series in Batavia. Two home runs sealed the deal in the Doubledays' (30-22) 5-3 win over the Muckdogs (23-29) to give Auburn some momentum going into their last homestand before the All-Star break.
It was a polarizing outing for Francys Peguero after he allowed three runs over five innings of work. El Pegui would have been in line for his first scoreless outing since June 25 - when he shut down the Crosscutters over five innings - had it not been for two mistake pitches.
Of the four hits that Peguero allowed on the night, two home runs proved to be the most costly. After the Doubledays gifted Peguero with two runs of support at the top of the second inning, Muckdogs left fielder Michael Donadio launched an 0-2 delivery left over the heart of the plate over the left field wall to cut Auburn's lead in half. Then, with two outs and a runner on second, Luke Jarvis brought the Muckdogs to within one once again with a two-run homer in the fifth inning.
The Doubledays offense, however, produced just enough to give Peguero his fourth win of the season. After loading the bases in the second inning, a walk by Cole Daily and a fielder's choice on a ball hit by Cody Wilson gave Auburn it's first two runs of the game. Wilson came up big two innings later with an RBI knock to make it a 3-1 game. Pablo O'Connor - the Doubledays' all-star cleanup hitter - then led off the fifth inning with a booming home run for Auburn's fourth run of the night.
With the offense getting the job done on it's part, the bullpen then combined to go four scoreless to make sure Peguero didn't get back on the bus to Auburn empty handed. Colin Morse took over for El Pegui in the seventh and threw a scoreless inning, and Ryan Tapani got through the seventh and eighth without a scratch. And for good measure, Jamori Blash hit a much needed insurance run in the ninth inning to give the Doubledays a 5-3 lead. Nector Ramirez closed it out for the Doubledays in perfect fashion for his first save of the year.
Auburn had multi-hit games from three players, with Adalberto Carrillo leading the charge after a 3-for-5 night. Though it won't show on the stat sheet, Wilson had an extraordinary day in the field by robbing two base hits in center while also notching a hit.
The Doubledays will be back in action on Saturday when the State College Spikes head to Auburn for a 6:30PM start.
