Cubs Place Beliveau, DeWitt on D.L.

IF Diory Hernandez joins Iowa
May 26, 2012
Des Moines, IA - The Chicago Cubs have placed LHP Jeff Beliveau and IF Blake DeWitt on the disabled list. Beliveau is on the D.L. retroactive to May 22 with a left shoulder strain. DeWitt was officially placed on the D.L. yesterday with a sprained left wrist. The Cubs have also signed free agent IF Diory Hernandez and assigned him to Iowa.

Beliveau is 0-1 with a 3.00 ERA (7 ER/21.0 IP) in 16 appearances with Iowa. The southpaw has not allowed a run and has only given up one hit in his last five relief outings (5.1 IP).

DeWitt suffered his injury while diving for a ball in left field on Thursday against Tacoma at Principal Park. He had an MRI and was checked out by team doctors in Chicago. He will rejoin the I-Cubs in Memphis and stay with the team while he recovers. He has played in just four games since clearing waivers and accepting his assignment to join Iowa on May 18.

Hernandez was released by Triple-A Oklahoma City on May 23. The Dominican import hit .159 (7-for-44) with two RBI in 32 games with the RedHawks.

The 28-year-old middle infielder was signed by the Houston Astros as a minor league free agent on Dec. 2, 2011 and attended the club's big league camp as a non-roster invitee to Spring Training.

Hernandez appeared in 75 major league games with the Braves from 2009-11, batting a combined .157 (20-for-127) with three homers and 11 RBI. He is a career .272 hitter with 37 home runs and 337 RBI through nine minor league seasons entering this year.

The Iowa Cubs face the Memphis Redbirds for game two of a four-game set tonight at AutoZone Park. The game starts at 6:05 p.m. and will be broadcast live on AM 940 with the pre-game show starting at 5:45.
