Barons Pitching Staff Strike Out 16 in win

The Birmingham Barons pretty much played a near perfect game defeating the Pensacola Blue Wahoos 6-1 Tuesday night at the Blue Wahoos Stadium. Barons pitching had 16 strikeouts in the game while the Barons pounded out 11 hits on the night.

Blake Battenfield (2-0, 0.90) went five innings for the win. Battenfield struckout nine only giving up one run on four hits with no walks. Relief pitcher Bennett Sousa closed out the game going two innings with no runs and no hits striking out three and with two walks.

The Barons (6-1) scored first in the game in the second inning when Ti’Quan Forbes singled home Carlos Perez. With the run, the Barons took an early 1-0 lead.

In the third inning, the Barons hot bats scored four runs. A Romy Gonzalez RBI double scored Zach Remillard. Micker Adolfo hit his second home run of the season scoring Gonzalez. Forbes RBI double scored Jameson Fisher and the Barons took a 5-0 lead.

Pensacola (4-3) scored in the third inning on a double play ball for their only run of the game. With the run, the Barons still led 5-1.

In the top of the fifth inning, the Barons scored their final run of the game on a Craig Dedelow RBI double scoring Forbes. With the run, the Barons led 6-1 and the Barons bullpen shut down the Wahoos the rest of the game. Zach Muckenhirn pitched the sixth inning and J.B. Olson pitched the seventh inning for the Barons.

For the Barons hitters, Forbes went 3-for-4 on the night with two RBI’s and a run scored. Dedelow was 2-for-3 in the game with a RBI and Gonzalez was 2-for-5 with a RBI and a run scored.
