Beach Birds Walk-Off on Sunday

RJ Yeager singled on a bloop fly ball to right field in the bottom of the ninth inning on Sunday, and Darlin Moquete crossed the plate as the winning run against the Jupiter Hammerheads at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium.

The Cardinals prevailed 6-5 on an afternoon where they saw a 5-1 lead evaporate in the seventh and eighth innings. In their last chance to avoid extra innings, Darlin Moquete led off the ninth with a single, before Jake Burns reached safely on a bunt one at bat later. Victor Scott advanced the runners into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt, and Chris Rotondo flew out to center field before Thomas Francisco was intentionally walked with two outs.

Rotondo hit his first career home run in the first inning to open the scoring in the series finale between the two RDCS rivals. The Cardinals doubled their lead two innings later on a Francisco sacrifice fly.

After Jupiter pulled within 2-1 in the sixth, Jeremy Rivas and Alex Iadisernia logged RBI doubles before the latter would score from third base on a wild pitch. Palm Beach took a four-run lead, but would surrender three runs a frame later and allowed a game-tying solo home run to the Hammerheads' Javier Sanoja in the eighth.

Jose Davila was in line for the win, going five innings and striking out a pair of batters on the day. He didn't allow an earned run, but lost the decision when the game was tied late. Gustavo Rodriguez eanred a hold in one and 1/3 frames tossed. And in spite of blowing a save opportunity with the solo homer surrendered, Chris Gerard gave up no other damage and took the win. The New Jersey native threw two and 2/3 innings and moved to 4-3 on the year.

The Cardinals won in spite of committing six errors in the 12:00 p.m. contest. It was the fifth win in six games for Palm Beach, who also claim a season series victory over the Miami Marlins affiliate, taking 14 of the 25 games between the teams in 2022. Palm Beach improves to 52-48 on the year after starting 14-27, and continues to hold a Florida State League East Division second-half lead.

The St. Louis affiliate embarks on a six-game road trip to Bradenton, where they'll open against the Marauders at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The Cards are next in action at home on August 16 vs. Fort Myers.
