CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- The Peoria Chiefs put the go-ahead run in scoring position in the top of the ninth inning but their rally fell short in a 2-1 loss to Cedar Rapids on Sunday.
Chiefs starter Connor Lunn made his second start of the series and was cruising through four innings. At one point, the right-hander retired 11 batters in a row. In the fifth inning, the Kernels scored two runs on just one hit, as a walk, a hit by pitch and an error set up the frame.
The Peoria bullpen did an admirable job keeping the deficit at 2-0. Relievers Freddy Pacheco, Fabian Blanco and Jacob Schlesener combined for seven strikeouts over 3.1 innings and did not allow a run.
In the ninth, back-to-back singles from Brady Whalen and Leandro Cedeno set up Moises Castillo, who singled on a line drive to right field to score Whalen and cut the deficit in half. With two outs in the ninth, a wild pitch allowed Cedeno to move to third and Castillo to trot to second, which put the go-ahead run in scoring position. Cristhian Longa struck out, however, to end the contest and secure a series sweep for Cedar Rapids.
The Chiefs are off on Monday but return to action on Tuesday, as they host the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, the High-A affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 pm.
