LAKEWOOD, NJ - The Charleston RiverDogs stunned the BlueClaws on Bark in the Park Day, winning 2-1 at FirstEnergy Park on Blake Rutherford's two-run home run with two outs in the ninth inning.
Rutherford's home run, his second of the season, hit off the chain-link fence atop the padded wall and gave Charleston their only two runs of the game and their second straight ninth-inning comeback win over Lakewood.
The RiverDogs (17-6/51-42) scored three in the ninth to top Lakewood (10-13/50-43) on Saturday night. The two games were just the second and third times all year the BlueClaws lost a game they led entering the ninth inning.
Hibbs fell to 5-2 with the loss while Charleston's Cristian Morris (4-1) earned the win with two innings of relief, allowing one run. David Sosebee came on and threw a 1-2-3 ninth inning to earn his fifth save of the year.
The BlueClaws got their run in the seventh on a home run by David Martinelli, his sixth of the season, to break a scoreless tie.
Lakewood starter Adonis Medina went six innings and allowed no runs on three hits with seven strikeouts but got a no-decision.
Charleston starter Rony Garcia did the same - throwing six scoreless innings and did not factor in the decision.
In the eighth, Charleston had a runner at first base but Carlos Vidal was thrown trying to steal second by Edgar Cabral. The Lakewood catcher threw out two potential base-stealers on Sunday and has thrown out 29 on the season, the third most in the league.
The BlueClaws and RiverDogs finish their series on Monday morning at 11:05 am. LHP Nick Fanti (6-2) starts for Lakewood opposite RHP Austin DeCarr (1-1).
