Tejeda and Boyd Win Weekly Awards

PORTLAND, ME - The Eastern League is pleased to announce the winners of the Eastern League Player of the Week Award and Eastern League Pitcher of the Week Award for the period of May 11th through May 17th.

Portland Sea Dogs third baseman/outfielder Oscar Tejeda has been selected as the Eastern League Player of the Week for the period of May 11th-May 17th. The 25-year old hit .467 (14-for-30) with six doubles, one triple, 10 RBIs, eight runs scored, two walks and a .733 slugging percentage in seven games for the Sea Dogs last week. Tejeda, who is a native of San Cristobal, Dominican Republic, reached base in all seven games he played in last week and had multiple hits in four of those games, including going 4-for-6 with three doubles, four RBIs and one run scored in Portland's 9-8 loss to the visiting Trenton Thunder on Wednesday. The 6'1", 170 lb. slugger led all Eastern League players in RBIs (10), doubles (6), extra-base hits (7) and slugging percentage (.733) last week and tied for the league lead in runs scored (8), hits (14), triples (1) and total bases (22). He also ranked among the weekly leaders in batting average (.467-2nd), OPS (1.222-2nd) and on-base percentage (.485-5th). Oscar, who currently leads the league with a .365 batting average, was signed by the Boston Red Sox as a minor league free agent on February 13, 2015. He was originally signed by the Red Sox as an international free agent on July 2, 2006 and has also spent time in the Pittsburgh and Washington organizations.

Matt Boyd, a left-handed starting pitcher for the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, has been selected as the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week for the period of May 11th-May 17th. The 6'3", 215 lb. hurler started a pair of games for the Fisher Cats last week and had a record of 1-0 with 11 strikeouts and a 0.00 ERA. Boyd, who is a native of Mercer Island, Washington, made his first start of the week last Tuesday against the visiting New Britain Rock Cats and earned a no decision after giving up one unearned run on four hits and one walk while striking out seven batters over five innings in New Hampshire's 2-1 loss. Matt made his second start of the week on Sunday afternoon at Binghamton and pitched seven shutout innings in a 5-0 win by the Fisher Cats. He scattered seven hits while striking out four batters and walking one as he improved his record to 3-1 on the season. The 24-year old tied for the league lead in ERA (0.00) last week and also ranked among the leaders in strikeouts (11-tied 2nd) and wins (1-tied 4th). Matt, who currently leads the league in ERA (1.02), strikeouts (48) and batting average against (.173), was selected by the Toronto Blue Jays in the sixth round of the 2013 draft after going 11-4 with a 2.04 ERA in 20 games, 18 starts, during his senior season at Oregon State University.
