Prospect Roundup: Games of July 16

Dodgers RHP Jose De Leon, Double-A Tulsa: 5 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 10 K -- The 22-year-old runs his fastball into the mid-90s and keeps hitters off the smoke with an above-average change and promising slider. De Leon's entire repertoire plays up because he does a tremendous job hiding the ball. Hitters literally don't see the ball until it leaves De Leon's hand thanks to his ability to first hide it behind his body as he winds, then keep it behind his right elbow as he goes through his throwing motion. It's a nifty trick that can't really be taught, but it's what has De Leon rocketing to the top half of a lot of midseason top 50 and 100 prospect lists.

Braves RHP Lucas Sims, Class A Advanced Carolina: 6 IP, 5 H, R, ER, BB, 8 K -- Sims' 2014 season was almost baffling. The right-hander just lost his ability to miss bats in the Carolina League, watching his strikeout rate plummet from 27.9 percent in 2013 to 15.8 percent. He's ticked that number up to 18.5 percent this year, but he's also walking more batters than ever. Even with Thursday's strong outing, his ERA is 5.60 in 11 starts. Sims has spun a few gems and shown that there's still something in the tank for the 2012 first-rounder (21st overall), but as a whole, the 21-year-old's results haven't been encouraging.

Indians OF Clint Frazier, Class A Advanced Lynchburg: 3-for-4, HR, 2 RBI, R, SB -- The 20-year-old has shown flashes of the plus to plus-plus power he could develop thanks to some of the best bat speed in the Minors, but he hasn't consistently tapped into it yet. The fifth pick in the 2013 Draft has nine homers and a .262/.356/.408 line in 85 games this year. He's cut down on the swing-and-miss in his game pretty dramatically this season but still has strides to make with his pitch selection. He's trending in the right direction, though, and still has one of the highest offensive ceilings of any player in the Minors.

Giants C Aramis Garcia, Class A Augusta: 3-for-5, HR, 2 RBI, R, K -- Garcia has five homers in his past seven games, including a pair of four-baggers July 14. The 2014 second-rounder out of Florida International has promising talents on both sides of the ball and could develop into a solid two-way player. On the season, he has a .268/.350/.475 line with 13 homers in 68 games.

Red Sox SS Javier Guerra, Class A Greenville: 3-for-5, HR, 2B, 4 RBI, R, K -- Guerra doesn't look like much of a power hitter and is listed at just 155 pounds, but he keeps on slugging for the Drive. The 19-year-old has 13 homers in 72 games with the Drive, including three in his past three games after going yard twice July 12. The Panamanian has done as much for his prospect reputation as just about any player in the Minor Leagues this season and has emerged as one of Boston's top prospects.

Mets RHP Matt Blackham, Class A Short Season Brooklyn: 6 IP, 5 H, R, ER, BB, 10 K -- Blackham has been untouchable for the Cyclones this year, striking out 40 in 29 1/3 innings while posting a 2.76 ERA. The 2014 29th-rounder is undersized at 5-foot-11 and has just average fastball velocity, but his curveball is a swing-and-miss pitch and his command has been good enough to let his stuff play up this season. The 22-year-old will need to prove his stuff works against better competition, but he's at least been good enough to warrant a follow from Mets' fans.

Brewers OF Monte Harrison, Rookie-level Helena: 2-for-3, 5 BB, 3 SB in doubleheader -- Harrison's wheels were among the best in the 2014 Draft when Milwaukee took him in the second round but didn't get to showcase them much with Class A Wisconsin this year because of a .246 on-base percentage. The Brewers dropped the 19-year-old back to Rookie ball, and suddenly he's become an on-base machine. Harrison has reached in 11 of his last 12 plate appearances and has a .313/.414/.518 line in 23 Pioneer League games.
