Snell, Arcia lead Southern League All-Stars
Blake Snell's dominant run through the Minors and Orlando Arcia's ability to lead the Biloxi Shuckers -- a team that didn't play at home for its first 54 games of the season -- were already two of the cooler stories of the 2015 season. They became a little cooler Wednesday.
The Rays' No. 2 prospect and Brewers top prospect were named to the Southern League end-of-season All-Star team, the Double-A circuit announced Wednesday.
Snell made 12 starts for Double-A Montgomery from May 1-July 18 and was dominant in the short span, going 6-2 with a 1.57 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 79 strikeouts in 68 2/3 innings. The 22-year-old left-hander did not allow a run in his first four outings with the Biscuits as part of his 46-inning scoreless streak to start the season. He has a 1.33 ERA with 157 strikeouts over 129 innings at three levels in the Rays system and has climbed to No. 45 in MLB.com's ranking of overall prospects as a result.
Arcia's season started with a somewhat similar bang: he helped Biloxi captured a Southern League South Division first-half title, despite the Shuckers' lengthy road trip. The 21-year-old shortstop leads the circuit with 36 doubles this season and ranks second with 152 hits, fifth with a .457 slugging percentage, sixth with a .308 batting average and eighth with an .807 OPS.
Twins No. 10 prospect and Chattanooga outfielder Adam Brett Walker II also earned a spot on the end-of-season All-Star team thanks to his league-leading 30 homers and 103 RBIs.
UPDATE: Chattanooga outfielder Max Kepler was named the Southern League MVP on Thursday while Biloxi right-hander Jorge Lopez and manager Carlos Subero won the Most Outstanding Pitcher and Manager of the Year awards, respectively.
As of Thursday, Kepler, the No. 6 prospect in the Twins' farm system, is on track to win the slash-line Triple Crown as the league leader in average (.327), on-base percentage (.415) and slugging percentage (.540). Lopez ranks second in the circuit with a 2.29 ERA and places third with 134 strikeouts in 137 2/3 innings for the Shuckers. Subero guided the Brewers' Double-A affiiliate through its aforementioned 54-game-long season-opening road trip and has led the Shuckers to a Southern League-best 76-56 record.
