Demeritte, Petty highlight Cal All-Stars

In a circuit known for offense, the California League looks well-equipped to defend its turf.

Hot-hitting Mariners prospect Kyle Petty and Rangers slugger Travis Demeritte were among those voted to the California League All-Star team on Wednesday ahead of the Class A Advanced matchup with the visiting Carolina League later this month.

Petty, batting .346 with Bakersfield, is tied for the Minor League-lead in hits with 79 and will anchor an infield that will take on All-Stars from the Carolina League in Lake Elsinore on June 21.

Demeritte, the Rangers' No. 21 prospect, was elected to the squad after hitting .255 with 15 homers, 32 RBIs and nine steals in 56 games with High Desert. The right-handed second baseman is tied for third in the Minors in homers and ranks second with 48 runs scored, a figure that also leads the Cal League.

Petty, who is tied for seventh in the Minors in average, was voted to the Cal League infield along with San Jose's Chris Shaw and CJ Hinojosa, Lake Elisnore's Luis Urias and Josh VanMeter and Visalia's Dawel Lugo. Demeritte, Hinojosa, Dawel, Petty and Shaw were all elected as starters.

Hinojosa, a 21-year-old 11th-round pick last summer out of Texas, ranks second in the league behind Petty with a .330 average for the Giants. Shaw's 41 RBIs have him third in the league.

High Desert's Jose Trevino will start behind the plate with Lancaster's Garrett Stubbs joining the roster as the second catcher.

Oakland native James Harris of Stockton was voted one of three outfield starters alongside Modesto's Omar Carrizales and Lancaster's Bobby Boyd. Inland Empire's Tim Arakawa and Rancho Cucamonga's Kyle Garlick both made the team in the outfield, although Garlick won't participate due to a promotion to Double-A Tulsa last month.

Boyd, a 23-year-old center fielder out of West Virginia, leads the league with 26 stolen bases and ranks third with a .323 average.

Minor League saves leader Rodolfo Martinez of San Jose highlights the Cal League bullpen. Martinez, 22, is 1-1 with a 0.74 ERA and 24 strikeouts in 24 1/3 innings this year, going 16-for-17 in saves. He's tied for the Minor League lead in saves with Hartford's Matt Carasiti.

Bakersfield righty Tyler Herb has been a bright spot this year among Cal League starters -- he's 6-2 with a 2.81 ERA and ranks tied for 12th in the Minors with 70 strikeouts.
