66ers chase Ortiz in third inning

Russ Ortiz's second Minor League rehab appearance was worse than his first as the veteran right-hander surrendered 11 runs in 2 1/3 innings for the Lancaster JetHawks on Wednesday night.

Trying to come back from a rib injury that has sidelined him since May, the Arizona Diamondbacks right-hander gave up 12 hits -- including a pair of home runs -- and a walk against the Inland Empire 66ers.

Michael Garciaparra, the younger brother of the Cubs shortstop, reached Ortiz for a three-run blast in the second inning and Erick Monzon led off the third with his 11th home run.

In his first rehabilitation appearance on Friday, the 31-year-old Ortiz gave up seven runs on seven hits in three innings for the Triple-A Tucson Sidewinders. His Minor League ERA is 30.38.

The 66ers did not let up once Ortiz exited, totaling 27 hits in an 18-2 rout. Garciaparra and Monzon both went 5-for-6. Garciaparra had two doubles, two homers and six RBIs, while Monzon homered twice, doubled and drove in three runs.

Every player in the Inland Empire lineup had at least one hit, with Sebastien Boucher collecting four and Carlos Arroyo, Bryan LaHair and Wladimir Balentien adding three apiece.
