Clutch Nimmo, dominant Oaks collect weekly awards

ROUND ROCK, Texas - Las Vegas 51s' outfielder Brandon Nimmo and Oklahoma City Dodgers' right-hander Trevor Oaks have been tabbed the Pacific Coast League Player and Pitcher of the Week for August 15-21, the league office announced Monday afternoon. Nimmo batted .452 (14-for-31), while hitting a two-run walk-off home run in the 12th inning August 16 vs. Round Rock. Oaks struck out 11 in a complete game victory over El Paso.

Nimmo's six extra-base hits and nine runs tied for the PCL weekly lead. He also totaled 25 bases in seven games, hit two home runs, drove in seven runs, walked five times and stole a base. The 23-year-old reached base at a .528 clip, registered an .806 slugging percentage and 1.334 OPS. His timely hits helped him edge out teammate Michael Conforto, who hit .548 (17-for-31) with a 1.414 OPS in seven contests. Along with Nimmo's walk-off, he hit a home run earlier in that August 16 game, marking the second time in his career he hit multiple home runs in a game- both coming this year. He played a major role in the 51s two other wins last week. August 18, also against the Express, he had two hits and two RBI in the 8-6 victory. Two days later, he fell a home run shy of the cycle, collecting three hits, a walk and two RBI in a one-run victory over division-leading Tacoma.

The Wyoming native started the season with Las Vegas and hit .328 (82-for-250) in 63 games before earning his first big league call up. In three separate stints with New York, totaling 20 games, Nimmo has batted .237 (14-for-59) with five RBI and eight runs scored. He hit his only career major league home run on July 1 off the Cubs' Jason Hammel.

Nimmo has played a combined 82 games with the 51s and leads the league in on-base percentage (.420), ranks third in OPS (.959), while his .345 average (114-for-330) only trails teammate T.J. Rivera (.347) for tops in the league. The Mets fifth ranked prospect entering the season according to Baseball America was selected by New York with the 13th overall pick of the 2011 First-Year Player Draft. His decorated career has seen him named to three Mid-Season All-Star teams (2013-15) and two SiriusXM All-Star Futures Games (2013, 2015). This is his first career Player of the Week.

Oaks fired his only career 9-inning complete game August 15 vs. El Paso, allowing three hits and one run, walking none and striking out a career-best 11 over 106 pitches (78 strikes). He took a no-hitter into the seventh inning, retiring 19 of the first 20 hitters, before surrendering a Hunter Renfroe one-out double. Oaks gave up his only run in the ninth inning, but set down the final three hitters to finish off his outing.

The 23-year-old began the season with Single-A Rancho Cucamonga and made four starts, posting a 3.60 ERA (25.0 IP, 10 ER) before joining Double-A Tulsa. Over 10 starts with the Drillers, Oaks recorded a 2.14 ERA (63.0 IP, 15 ER) - the fifth-best mark in the Texas League over that time - before being promoted to Oklahoma City. He has made nine starts with the Dodgers, seven going for quality starts, while sporting a 5-1 record with a 3.03 ERA (62.1 IP, 21 ER), eight walks and 48 strikeouts. Oaks was selected by the Dodgers in the seventh round of the 2014 First-Year Player Draft out of California Baptist University. This is his second career Pitcher of the Week, having previously won in June with Tulsa.
