Barnes and Knapp Win Weekly Awards

PORTLAND, ME - The Eastern League is pleased to announce the winners of the Eastern League Player of the Week Award and Eastern League Pitcher of the Week Award for the period of August 22nd through August 28th:

Altoona Curve outfielder Barrett Barnes has been selected as the Eastern League Player of the Week for the period of August 22nd-August 28th. The 25-year old batted .409 (9-for-22) with two doubles, three home runs, seven RBIs, four runs scored, two walks and a .909 slugging percentage in six games for the Curve last week. Barnes, who is a native of Sugarland, Texas, kicked off his week by homering in back-to-back games on Monday and Tuesday night at Harrisburg. He reached base in all six games he played in last week and had multiple hits in three of those games. The 5'11", 209 lb. slugger led all Eastern League players in home runs (3), slugging percentage (.909) and OPS (1.389) last week and also ranked among the weekly leaders in total bases (20-2nd), extra-base hits (5-tied 2nd), RBIs (7-tied 3rd), on-base percentage (.480-6th), batting average (.409-8th) and hits (9-tied 10th). Barrett, who also won the Player of the Week award for the period of August 8th-August 14th and is currently tied for third in the league with a .311 batting average, was selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the supplemental first round of the 2012 draft with the 45th overall pick after hitting .325 with nine homers, 49 RBIs and 19 stolen bases during his junior season at Texas Tech.

Ricky Knapp, a right-handed starting pitcher for the Binghamton Mets, has been selected as the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week for the period of August 22nd-August 28th. The 6'1", 215 lb. hurler started a pair of games for the B-Mets last week and had a record of 1-1 with 16 strikeouts and a 2.25 ERA. Knapp, who is a native of Port Charlotte, Florida, made his first start of the week on Tuesday against the visiting Hartford Yard Goats and pitched a complete game for the B-Mets in their 9-1 victory. He gave up three hits while striking out a career-high 10 batters and walking two over nine innings. Ricky made his second start on Sunday at Bowie and finished with seven strikeouts and two walks while giving up three runs on four hits over seven innings while taking the loss in a 6-2 Baysox victory. The 24-year old led all Eastern League pitchers in strikeouts (17) and innings pitched (16.0) last week and also ranked among the weekly leaders in batting average against (.130-3rd), wins (1-tied 3rd) and WHIP (0.69-5th). Ricky, who has a record of 4-1 with a 2.90 ERA in six starts for the B-Mets this season while also spending time with Class-A St. Lucie and Triple-A Las Vegas, was selected by the New York Mets in the eighth round of the 2013 draft out of Florida Gulf Coast University.
