Bote, Flete end scoreless stalemate with walk-off in 11

Birds set club record for wins in a month
August 30, 2016

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (August 30, 2016) - Bryant Flete singled up the middle to help the Myrtle Beach Pelicans to a 1-0 walk-off win over the Lynchburg Hillcats in 11 innings Tuesday at TicketReturn.com Field at Pelicans Ballpark.

In a scoreless game in the bottom of the eleventh, Pelicans (78-55, 42-21) infielder David Bote tripled to the wall in right-center to begin the frame. After Hillcats (82-52, 37-27) reliever Jared Robinson (3-5) struck out Jesse Hodges, Flete singled to center to score Bote and win the game for Myrtle Beach.

The win is the Pelicans' eighth straight, and second consecutive walk-off in against Lynchburg. Ian Rice ended the last matchup with Lynchburg on a walk-off single in the tenth inning on August 21.

Myrtle Beach's 29th win in 36 games is also the club's 22nd victory in August, setting a new Pelicans record for triumphs in a month.

Birds pitchers struck out 14 batters on the night, led by the starter Trevor Clifton, who fanned seven. Clifton worked six shutout frames, allowing only three hits without walking anyone.

Tommy Thorpe then tossed three scoreless innings, striking out two without allowing a hit. Daury Torrez (2-2) whiffed five in two innings of one-hit ball to earn the win.

With the game scoreless in the bottom of the ninth, the Pelicans got a leadoff double from Yasiel Balaguert to put the potential winning run into scoring position. After Lynchburg intentionally walked Flete, Ian Rice popped up a bunt. Robinson charged to field the pop up but intentionally let the ball drop, starting a 1-5-4 double play. Robinson then got Jeffrey Baez to bounce into a fielder's choice to end the inning and send the game to extras.

The Pelicans and Hillcats will meet again Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. RHP Preston Morrison (3-0, 2.12 ERA) makes the start for Myrtle Beach against Lynchburg LHP Thomas Pannone (2-0, 2.35 ERA). Fans can enjoy BOGO Hebrew National hot dogs. Coverage of the game begins at 6:50 p.m. on MyrtleBeachPelicans.com/Broadcast, the MiLB First Pitch app, TuneIn and MiLB.tv.
