Mariners Announce 2012 Coaching Staff

The Seattle Mariners announced the coaching staff for the High Desert Mavericks for the 2012 season. Pedro Grifol will manage the Mavericks. He will be joined by pitching coach Tom Dettore, hitting coach Roy Howell and trainer B.J. Downie.

Pedro Grifol is making his return to coaching in his first season as manager with the High Desert Mavericks. This will mark his 13th season working in the Mariners Organization. He previously managed Seattle's Short Season Class A team in Everett from 2003-2005. During the 2011 season, Grifol was the Mariners Director of Minor League Operations. Pedro is currently managing the Cardenales de Lara in the Venezuelan Winter League.

Tom Dettore returns as High Desert's pitching coach for his third season and his fourth season with the Mariners. He spent the 2009 season as pitching coach for West Tennessee (now known as Jackson). He previously worked in the Pittsburgh Pirates organization as a Pitching Coordinator (1995-1998) and Pitching Coach at rookie league, A, AA, AAA and winter ball (1988-1995

Roy Howell is the hitting coach for High Desert in his first season with the Mariners minor league organization. He played 11 seasons in the Major Leagues for the Texas Rangers, Milwaukee Brewers, and Toronto Blue Jays. In 2011, Howell managed the Road Warriors of the Atlantic League, an independent baseball team.

B.J. Downie enters his first season in High Desert as the trainer. He was the athletic trainer in Pulaski in 2011. Downie spent the 2010 season in Clinton as the trainer. In 2009, he was the strength coach and assistant athletic trainer. Downie also worked at the AZL Mariners trainer in 2001.
