Seven-Run Inning Propels Giants To 9-5 Win

SAN JOSE - The San Jose Giants knocked out seven consecutive hits as part of a seven-run bottom of the sixth inning in a come-from-behind 9-5 win over the High Desert Mavericks on Tuesday evening at Municipal Stadium. San Jose finished the contest with 17 hits to snap their season-high losing streak at five games. The win improved the Giants' record to 13-7.

Carter Jurica (3-for-4, RBI) and Ricky Oropesa (3-for-4, RBI) had three hits each, including RBI singles during the sixth-inning eruption, to lead the offensive attack. Ryan Lollis (2-for-5, 2B), Joe Panik (2-for-5, RBI) and Adam Duvall (2-for-4, RBI) added two hits apiece.

San Francisco Giants second baseman Freddy Sanchez finished 2-for-4 with a pair of singles and three RBI's in the second game of his rehabilitation assignment with San Jose. Sanchez delivered a key two-run single during the sixth inning rally that gave the Giants the lead for good.

San Jose trailed by a 5-2 score entering the bottom of the sixth as Oropesa and Andrew Susac began the inning with back-to-back singles. After Jarrett Parker struck out, Jurica came through with the first of seven straight hits when he singled to load bases. Chris Lofton was up next and he bounced a single up the middle to bring home both Oropesa and Susac cutting the Mavericks advantage to 5-4. After Lollis reached on a bunt single to again load the bases, Sanchez grounded a sharp single down the left field line to score two more runs and give the Giants their first lead of the night.

The rally continued as Panik singled up the middle to plate Lollis before Duvall singled home Sanchez for an 8-5 advantage. Oropesa then capped the sixth-inning scoring with an RBI single to right extending the lead to 9-5.

Jose Valdez (1-1) was credited with the win out of the San Jose bullpen after tossing 1 1/3 perfect innings. Valdez, who entered the game with two runners on and two outs in the top of the sixth, retired all four batters that he faced, including a 1-2-3 seventh after the Giants took the lead.

Phil McCormick (1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO) relieved Valdez to begin the top of the eighth and worked a perfect inning before Seth Rosin (1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO) pitched around a single and an error to close it out in the ninth.

The Mavericks took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second against San Jose starter Justin Schumer as Mickey Wiswall led off with a double and scored on John Hicks' one-out RBI single. The Giants immediately answered in the bottom of the second as Jurica came through with a bases loaded RBI single, but High Desert's George Mieses was able to keep the game tied when he induced the next hitter, Lofton, to ground into an inning-ending double play.

High Desert reclaimed the lead in the top of the fourth when Kevin Rivers belted a three-run home run. Consecutive one-out singles from Wiswall and Steven Proscia put runners on first and second and then with two outs, Rivers drove a fly ball over the fence in right to put the Mavericks in front by a 4-1 margin.

In the bottom of the fifth, Lollis doubled to deep right center field with two outs and immediately scored when the next batter, Sanchez, singled to shallow center. High Desert though went back ahead by three runs in the top of the sixth as Rivers led off with a double and scored on Brad Miller's two-out infield single.

Schumer finished his night with five runs allowed (all earned) on 11 hits over 5 2/3 innings. He walked one and struck out two.

Mieses (1-2) suffered the loss for the Mavericks after yielding seven runs (all earned) on 12 hits in 5 1/3 innings of work. The tying and go-ahead runs both scored for the Giants after Mieses left the game.

Notes: Nine of the 11 batters that came to the plate for the Giants in the bottom of the sixth inning singled ... 16 of San Jose's 17 hits were singles ... The seven runs scored was one shy of the Giants' season-high in an inning (eight; April 6 at Modesto) ... Sanchez is 3-for-7 with three singles and three RBI's in two games with San Jose ... The Giants were 9-for-13 with runners in scoring position ... San Jose out-hit High Desert by a 17-12 margin ... All nine Giants starters finished with at least one hit.
