Turner, Canadians combine on gem

Colton Turner made a pretty convincing opening statement Monday.

Turner allowed one hit over three innings in his pro debut and three relievers tossed six hitless innings as Class A Short-Season Vancouver routed Spokane, 9-1.

The 21st-round pick by the Blue Jays earlier this month cruised through the first two innings, walking just Ryan Rua in the second. After getting two quick outs to start the third, he issued a pass to Christopher Garcia and gave up an RBI double to Gabriel Roa. Turner, who fanned three, recovered to retire Preston Beck on a flyout to right field.

The 21-year-old left-hander was selected out of Texas State following a strong season for the Bobcats. Turner was 5-3 with a 2.46 ERA in 14 starts while fanning 87 batters in 87 2/3 innings. He was an All-Southland Conference Second Team selection in 2012.

Bobby Brosnahan, who signed with the Blue Jays as a non-drafted free agent, was credited with the win for the Canadians, striking out three over three perfect innings. Philip Brua, who appeared in 27 games for Vancouver in 2011, walked one over two frames and Drew Permison retired the final three batters to close out the game.

Balbino Fuenmayor drove in three runs and finished a triple shy of the cycle while Dan Klein collected four RBIs. Fuenmayor now leads the Northwest League with nine hits and eight RBIs.

Joseph Burns, the Rangers' 28th-rounder, fanned three over two innings of relief for the Indians.
