Doubledays avoid sweep with 6-5 win in Williamsport

June 25, 2012

WILLIAMSPORT, P.A. - The Auburn Doubledays (4-3) and Williamsport Crosscutters (4-3) played their second straight 10-inning game on Sunday evening, but this time with a different result as the Doubledays came away with their fourth one-run win of the season, 6-5 over the Crosscutters.

Shortstop Wes Schill led off the tenth for the Doubledays with a double, and catcher Spencer Kieboom pushed him to third with a sac bunt down the first base line. Second baseman Tony Renda then drove Schill home on a single up the middle, giving the Doubledays their winning margin. RHP Richie Mirowski (1-0) pitched a scoreless tenth as part of 2.2 innings of work to get the win.

For the first six innings the game went back and forth as neither team ever lead by more than two runs. That two run edge came after the top of the sixth when the Doubledays had put a three spot up on the scoreboard. Left fielder Estarlin Martinez lead off the sixth with a mammoth solo homerun to left that hit off one of the light posts. It was the first homerun for the Doubledays since June 19th, and the team's fourth of the season.

After Martinez's homer, the bases loaded up with only one out in the inning. RHP Steven Inch then walked Renda to push across the second run of the inning for the Doubledays, and DH Carlos Alvarez hit a sac fly to left that was dropped by LF Larry Greene to allow the third run of the inning to score uncontested. The error by Greene was one of two on the night for Williamsport.

The Crosscutters tied the game in the bottom of the sixth with two runs of their own. Second baseman Trey Ford lead off the frame with a double to the gap in left-center field, and two batters later SS Roman Quinn hit a ball to the same spot that he was able to tunr into a triple, driving home Ford and pulling Williamsport within one. Quinn then scored on a single by CF Diego Gonzalez to tie the game 5-5.

RHP Silvio Medina started for the Doubledays and allowed one run on one hit over four innings. His counterpart for the Crosscutters was RHP Ulises Joaquin, who went 5.1 innings, allowing four runs on five hits while walking four and striking out three. It was RHP Matthew Sisto who got charged with the loss, giving up one run on four hits in two innings.

The Doubledays return home on Monday to begin a six game home stand and three game series with the Jamestown Jammers. Auburn will send LHP Gregory Baez (0-0) to the mound for his second start of the year. He will square off against RHP Mason Hope (0-0) for the Jammers. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm.
