Lake County Squashes South Bend 9-3

(Eastlake, OH) - The Lake County Captains (32-25, 63-63) defeated the South Bend Silver Hawks (29-28, 64-63) by a final of 9-3. Lake County scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to ice the ballgame. In the inning, the Captains batted around. The first run came home to score on an error. Bryson Myles singled home two with the bases loaded. Later in the inning, Zach MacPhee doubled home a pair and the score was 9-3 Captains headed to the eighth. The 9-3 score was the Final.

South Bend scored first in the opening frame. Chris Ellison walked to begin the ballgame. With two outs Matt Helm was hit by a pitch and then Ryan Court triple home both runners and South Bend was up a pair 2-0. South Bend made it 3-0 in the third when Tom Belza doubled and scored on a single by Ryan Court. Court had all three RBI's for South Bend.

Lake County put up two runs in the bottom of the third inning. Jose Ramirez hit his second homerun of the season to deep left field and the Captains were on the board, but still trailed 3-1. Later in the inning, Jordan Smith doubled and Jerrud Sabourin singled him home and the lead was trimmed to one run at 3-2.

In the fourth inning Lake County took the lead. With two outs, Zach MacPhee walked and Yhoxian Medina singled to left field and MacPhee moved to second base. Both runners moved up on a wild pitch. Jose Ramirez doubled down the right field line and both runners scored. Lake County led the ballgame 4-3 and set up the rally in the seventh inning.

RHP Mason Radeke (7-6) started the ballgame for the Captains and earned the win. Radeke pitched five innings, allowed four hits, three earned runs, one walk and six strikeouts. Joshua Nervis pitched four shutout innings allowing two hits one walk and three strikeouts. Nervis was credited with his first save of the season.

LHP Keith Hessler (2-3) started the ballgame for South Bend, and was saddled with the loss. Hessler pitched five innings, allowing eight hits, four earned runs, one walk and fanned two. Hessler also surrendered the homerun to Jose Ramirez. Kable Hogben pitched one inning, he allowed three hits, five runs, four earned, and one walk. Alex Capaul pitched two innings allowing just one hit with two strikeouts.

On Thursday, The Captains will play a double header against South Bend. In game one, LHP Elvis Araujo (6-9, 5.05) will start for the Captains. South Bend will send LHP Andrew Barbosa (2-3) to the mound. In game two, RHP Cody Anderson (4-6, 3.18) will take the ball for Lake County and South Bend will counter with RHP Jesse Darrah (8-5). Both games are scheduled to be seven innings and game one will start at 6:00 PM.

Thursday is Thirsty Thursday, presented by ESPN 850 WKNR, and will feature a .25-cent beer Happy Hour for one hour before game time and half-price draft beer and fountain soda until 9 PM.
