Captains Announce 2010 Field Staff

(Eastlake, OH) - The Lake County Captains and the Cleveland Indians announced the 2010 Captains field staff today which is led by manager Ted Kubiak who managed the team in 2001 when they were located in Columbus, Georgia prior to moving to Eastlake. The pitching coach will be Mickey Callaway and Phil Clark will be the hitting coach. Issei Kamada will be the club's head athletic trainer.

Kubiak is in his 17th season as part of the Indians organization and takes over for Aaron Holbert who will manage the Indians class A affiliate in Kinston, NC in 2010. Kubiak has managed at various levels for 11 of those years with stints in Canton-Akron ('94-'95), Watertown ('96 -'98), Mahoning Valley ('99 -'00, and '03), Columbus ('01), and Kinston ('02). He was the Indians defensive coordinator from 2004-2008 before returning to be the manager of the Arizona League Indians last year. Kubiak's teams have made the playoffs six times reaching the league championship round in four of those years. Kubiak spent parts of 10 years in the major leagues with seven different teams. Most notably, he was part of the World Champion Oakland A's teams from 1972 - 1974. Ted lives in San Diego, California and has a son Justin and a daughter Kristi.

Callaway joins the Indians organization and this marks his debut as a coach after retiring from baseball last year. Callaway comes to Lake County after spending the last five seasons pitching in Korea and Taiwan. He was named the interim head coach for the Texas A&M International Dustdevils baseball team at the beginning of the 2008 season before signing a contract with the Laredo Broncos of the United Summer League. Originally a seventh round selection by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in the 1996, he made his Major League Debut in 1999 and spent parts of five seasons in the Majors with the Devil Rays, Texas Rangers and Anaheim Angels compiling a 4-11 record with a 6.27 ERA in 40 games/20 starts at the Major League level. He was named the Minor League Pitcher of the Year in 2001 for Tampa Bay and in 2002 for Anaheim.

Clark is in his fourth year in the Indians organization having spent two seasons as a coach with the GCL Indians and last year as a coach with the Mahoning Valley Scrappers. Clark was drafted in the first round (18th overall) in 1986 by the Detroit Tigers and played professionally for 15 seasons including spending parts of five years in the majors. He had a career batting average of .276. In 1993 he hit a career high .312 with 9 HR and 33 RBI's for the San Diego Padres. He ended his career in Japan where he was named Japan League MVP in 1998. Phil lives in Orlando, Florida and has sons Christopher and Nicholas.

Kamada comes to the Captains after holding the same position at Mahoning Valley in 2009.

The Captains will join the Midwest League in 2010 and will open the season at Classic Park on Thursday April 8 at 6:30 pm versus the West Michigan Whitecaps, the class A affiliate of the Detroit Tigers.
