Bryant diagnosed with foot contusion

Cubs fans can breathe a little easier.

Kris Bryant -- the team's top prospect and Minor League home run leader -- was diagnosed with a left foot contusion on Sunday, one day after leaving Triple-A Iowa's game after one plate appearance.

The 22-year-old third baseman underwent an MRI on Sunday after X-rays taken Saturday night were inconclusive. He's listed as day-to-day.

MLB.com's No. 3 overall prospect walked in the first inning Saturday, then left for a defensive replacement in the second.

"He walked down to first base, he was jogging down, and he felt uncomfortable," I-Cubs manager Marty Pevey said Saturday. "He fouled one off his foot -- that was three days ago -- and he was a little bit sore. So we had him taken in to get X-rays. ... It's all precautionary, of course."

Bryant leads the Minors with 40 homers, including 18 in 45 games with Iowa. He hit 22 in 68 games with Double-A Tennessee, a total that led the Southern League until Chattanooga's Scott Schebler finally passed him on Wednesday.

"I wouldn't have the lead if Kris Bryant were still here, I'll tell you that," Schebler said.

Overall, Bryant has a .333/.440/.678 slash line in 124 games and ranks second in the Minors with 103 RBIs. He was a Southern League midseason All-Star and represented the Cubs on the U.S. team at the All-Star Futures Game in Minneapolis.
