GreenJackets Defeat Cannon Ballers for Third Straight Win

Augusta Pulls Away from Kannapolis Late

NORTH AUGUSTA, SC: The Augusta GreenJackets (24-22) closed out the month of May with a third consecutive victory as they topped the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers (18-28), 10-4 to open the second act of their 12-game homestand.

The GreenJackets would come in hot to begin the night as they scored twice in the first inning on RBI singles by Cal Conley and Adam Zebrowski to race to a 2-0 lead.

Behind starter Kris Anglin, Augusta would have no issues holding the lead as the southpaw was excellent on Tuesday allowing no runs in five innings on the mound striking out six, and facing just two over the minimum.

The offense would spot him an extra run of support as Cal Conley came through again with another RBI in the bottom of the fifth, but this time he did it with a double to score Kadon Morton, giving the GreenJackets a 3-0 lead.

The Cannon Ballers would hang around as they manufactured a run in the sixth on a pair of stolen bases by Wilber Sanchez that forced a throwing error to get Kannapolis on the board and make it a 3-1 game.

Augusta would get that run back in the next half-inning on an RBI double by Mahki Backstrom to score Stephen Paolini as the two would swap spots on the base paths to advance the lead back to three runs at 4-1.

The best threat for the Cannon Ballers would come in the seventh inning when the first three batters of the inning reached via walks to load the bases with nobody out. But recently added pitcher Ronaldo Alesandro was able to minimize the damage to just two runs thanks to some great defense by Caleb Durbin who started up a double play to make the avenue out of the inning much easier. And then Durbin would make a diving stop on a ground ball off the bat of Victor Torres to slam the door on the inning for Kannapolis with the lead still in hand for Augusta at 4-3.

With the lead still one for the GreenJackets in the bottom of the eighth inning, Augusta's offense would take advantage of some walks of their own as they drew six free passes which resulted in two being walked in for runs. For good measure, Caleb Durbin provided a two-run double followed by Adam Zebrowski who brought home two more runs himself with a two-RBI single to make it a six-run inning, taking the GreenJackets' advantage to 10-3.

Kannapolis would score one run in the final inning but Estarlin Rodriguez secured the final three outs to give Augusta a series-opening win, 10-4.

Kris Anglin earned his first win as a starter while Estarlin Rodriguez was awarded a six-out save. Cannon Ballers' starter Christian Mena finished as the losing pitcher.

Cal Conley led the charge offensively for Augusta by reaching base three times, driving in two runs with two hits while scoring twice. Caleb Durbin also touched home twice while bringing in two runs with his team-best 11th double in the eighth inning. Adam Zebrowski matched his season-high with three RBIs on two singles in the ballgame.

The series continues Wednesday night with Luis Vargas on the mound for the GreenJackets against lefty Tommy Sommer for Kannapolis. First pitch of game two from SRP Park is at 7:05 pm.
