(UPTOWN CHARLOTTE, NC) -- Outfielders Blake Rutherford and Mark Payton both homered in a nine-run fifth inning to propel the Charlotte Knights to a 13-11 win over the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp in front of a Father’s Day crowd of 8,110 fans at Truist Field on Sunday evening. The Knights held on for the game six victory despite the Jumbo Shrimp coming back to score eight runs over the final three innings of the game.

Designated hitter Carlos Pérez provided a three-run homer in the bottom of the third inning. The home run was his team-leading 10th of the season with the Knights. Charlotte’s four-run third inning gave the team a 4-2 lead after three frames.

One inning later, the Charlotte bats once again put up an excellent offensive performance. This time, however, the Knights pounded out nine runs in the fourth inning. The inning was highlighted by a two-run home run from Rutherford and a three-run home run from Payton. Rutherford’s blast was his seventh of the season, while Payton connected on his eighth of the year. At that point, the Knights led the ‘Shrimp by a score of 13-2.

LHP Kyle Kubat (4-1, 5.31) started the game for the Knights and was superb over five innings. Kubat allowed just three runs over his five frames to earn his fourth win of the 2022 season.

The Jumbo Shrimp mounted a comeback against the Knights and battled back to score a run in the fifth inning, two runs in the seventh and six more runs in the eighth inning against the Charlotte bullpen. RHP Parker Markel was charged with all six runs (four earned) in the eighth.

With the Knights ahead by just two runs in the ninth inning, RHP J.B. Olson was called on to close the game. Olson, who started three games over a five-game stretch recently, recorded the final three outs to earn his first save of the season. The Jumbo Shrimp brought the tying run to second base in the ninth, but Olson closed out the game for Charlotte.

The Knights won two of the six games on the homestand. Shortstop Zach Remillard and first baseman Gavin Sheets had three hits each in the win on Sunday.

The Knights will now have an off day on Monday before hitting the road to open a six-game series in Worchester, MA against the Worcester Red Sox at Polar Park. This will be the team’s first-ever series against the Woo Sox. First pitch of game one of the series on Tuesday is set for 6:45 p.m. The “Voice of the Charlotte Knights” Matt Swierad will have the call for all of the action on 730 The Game and www.CharlotteKnights.com.
