(DURHAM, NC) -- The Charlotte Knights rallied for two runs in the top of the ninth inning, but fell just short in the opening game of a six-game series against the Durham Bulls from Durham Bulls Athletic Park by a score of 4-3 on Tuesday night. With two outs and runners on second and third base, designated hitter Blake Rutherford grounded out to first base to end the game.

Outfielder Mikie Mahtook provided two of Charlotte’s three runs in Tuesday’s opener. Mahtook’s sacrifice fly in the sixth inning scored Rutherford from third base. In the ninth, Mahtook launched his team-high 13th home run of the season to pull the Knights to within two runs, down 4-2. The Knights added one more run in the inning thanks to a ground-rule double from outfielder Jake Lamb. He went 1-for-5 with an RBI as he continued his major league rehab assignment.

Charlotte RHP Jonathan Stiever (3-5, 5.69) allowed three runs in five innings of work on Tuesday and was charged with the loss. The Bulls scored two runs in the first inning off Stiever, who then settled in the rest of the way. He gave up his third and final run of the day in the fifth inning. In all, the 24-year-old right-hander gave up three runs on seven hits over five frames. He also struck-out seven batters.

Outfielder Eloy Jiménez also continued his major league rehab and went 1-for-3 with a walk. Catcher Deivy Grullón added three hits in Tuesday’s loss, the team’s ninth straight of the season.

The Knights will continue the six-game series against the Durham Bulls on Wednesday night with first pitch set for 6:35 p.m. The “Voice of the Charlotte Knights” Matt Swierad will have the call on 730 The Game ESPN Charlotte and www.CharlotteKnights.com.
