Rodriguez Homers and Drives in Three, Missions Fall via Walk-off

SAN ANTONIO – Following a Sunday night shutout victory, the Missions offense jumped out to an early lead on Tuesday night. The long ball became a factor as Amarillo hit three to gain a 5-3 advantage. A long ball for Yorman Rodriguez tied the game for San Antonio. After squandering two scoring opportunities in the later innings, Amarillo cashed in on a lead-off double and walked it off for a 6-5 victory.

Bryce Jarvis was the starting pitcher for the Amarillo Sod Poodles. He entered Tuesday night’s matchup with an ERA of 11.34 in his career against the Missions. Jarvis continued to struggle against San Antonio as he allowed two runs in the top of the first inning. Thomas Milone hit a one-out double off the left field wall. He quickly came around to score as Domingo Leyba hit an RBI double to right field. Leyba scored on an RBI single from Yorman Rodriguez. San Antonio took an early 2-0 lead.

San Antonio added their third run of the game in the top of the second inning. Ripken Reyes began the inning by reaching base on an error. He advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt from Chandler Seagle. Reyes advanced to third base on a wild pitch. After a walk to Connor Hollis, Milone grounded out and Reyes came in to score. The Missions improved their lead to 3-0.

Brandon Komar was the starting pitcher for the Missions. After a scoreless first inning, Amarillo tied the game in the second inning. Eduardo Diaz started the inning with a double to left field. After retiring the next batter, Tim Tawa hit a two-run home run. Juan Centeno made it back-to-back with a solo home run to right field. Amarillo forced a 3-3 tie.

The Sod Poodles took their first lead in the bottom of the third inning. With one out in the inning, Triston English hit the third homer of the game for Amarillo. His third long ball of the season made it a 4-3 Amarillo lead.

Amarillo added an insurance run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Roby Enriquez began the inning by legging out a triple. After a groundout, Centeno drove in Enriquez with a single to center field. Amarillo improved their lead to 5-3.

The Missions used the long ball to tie the game in the top of the fifth inning. With two outs in the inning, Jarvis issued a walk to Leyba to extend the inning. He was replaced on the mound by Kenny Hernandez following the walk. The southpaw allowed a two-run home run to Rodriguez, the first batter he faced. His ninth long ball of the season tied the game up at 5-5.

San Antonio had a chance to regain the lead in the top of the seventh inning. With two outs in the inning, Leyba drew a walk and Rodriguez singled. With two runners on and two outs, Webster Rivas grounded out to leave the runners stranded.

The Mission had another scoring opportunity in the top of the ninth inning. Facing Cam Booser, Seagle and Hollis drew back-to-back walks to start the inning. Booser bounced back to strike out Milone and Leyba before being replaced by Jeff Bain. With two runners on and two outs, Rodriguez lined out to end the inning.

After two scoreless innings from Carlos Belen, Angel Felipe came on to pitch the bottom of the ninth inning. Enriquez started off the inning with a double off the right field wall. After retiring the next batter, a passed ball from Seagle allowed Enriquez to advance to third base. Juan Centeno ended the game with a line drive single to center field. Amarillo claimed a 6-5 walk-off victory.

The San Antonio Missions will continue their six-game series with the Amarillo Sod Poodles on Wednesday, July 13th. Right-hander Reggie Lawson (4-4, 4.47) is scheduled to pitch for the Missions. Left-hander Blake Walston (2-3, 6.32) is scheduled to pitch for the Sod Poodles. First pitch is expected at 7:05 p.m. from Hodgetown.
