Scrappers Top Batavia to Reclaim First Place

Niles, OH- The Mahoning Valley Scrappers scored two runs in both the first and seventh innings and used strong pitching once again to top the Batavia Muckdogs 4-1 on Sunday at Eastwood Field. With the win and a West Virginia loss, the Scrappers are once again in first place in the Pinkney Division.   
            In the bottom of the first inning the Scrappers would strike first. Oscar Gonzalez doubled to start the inning. He would then score the first run of the game when Nolan Jones followed with an RBI double. Jones then also scored when Austen Wade followed with an RBI single for a 2-0 lead.    
            James Karinchak would hold the Muckdogs hitless until the top of the fourth inning when he gave way to Felix Tati. Tati and Karinchak held Batavia to just four hits over the first seven innings.   
            Batavia finally got on the board with a run in the top of the seventh inning to cut the Scrappers lead to a single run.
            Mahoning Valley would answer right back in the bottom of the inning. Clark Scolamiero tripled to start the inning, it was his first extra base. Tyler Friis followed with an RBI sacrifice fly to score Scolamiero. Then with two outs, Jones and Wade reached on back to back singles. Jones would come around to score the final run of the game on Ulysses Cantu's RBI double.
            Jonathan Teaney came out of the bullpen and threw two scoreless innings to close out the game.  
            Karinchak took a no decision in three innings of work. He did not allow a hit or a run while walking three and striking out three. Tati (3-2) picked up the win with 4.2 innings of relief. Tati allowed one earned run on four hits. He walked two and struck out five. Teaney (2) earned his second save of the season in 1.1 innings of relief. Teaney allowed one hit and walked two while striking out four.
