Series Preview: Bees Take on Aviators For Last Home Series Of July

The 32-34 Salt Lake Bees are coming back to Utah to face off against the 34-32 Las Vegas Aviators for a six game series after finishing a road series with the Tacoma Rainiers.

The Bees played seven games against Tacoma and started off the series with a double header on Tuesday to make up for the game that was postponed due to rain on June 6. Salt Lake went 3-4 vs. the Rainers and put up a season-high 16 runs in Saturday's victory, marking the 12th time Salt Lake has scored 10 or more runs in a game.

Jo Adell was on a tear against the Rainers and continues to set the standard for power hitting this season. He still leads Triple-A in home runs and RBIs after crushing his 19th home run of the season and knocked in his 57th RBI of the season. Not to mention he has the second most extra base hits in Triple-A (37). Adell had a red hot series against Tacoma batting 7-for-21 (.333) with a double, a triple, a homerun and six RBIs. In Saturday's 16-4 victory Adell went three for five with a double, a home run, accounted for three runs while knocking in three Bees runners. Adell has been on fire for the month of July batting .333 with three home runs and 17 RBIs.

Jake Gatewood followed in Adell’s footsteps by not only lighting up the Rainiers bullpen, but by also having stellar performances throughout July while being on the leaderboards for home runs and RBIs. Gatewood had nine hits on 25 at bats (.360) against Tacoma while crushing three home runs, belting a double and brought 10 Bees runners around to score. In Tuesday’s game Gatewood went three-for-four with a double, a home run, an RBI and accounted for a run. Gatewood hit his 18th home run of the season putting him in third place for most home runs in Triple-A and earned his 49th RBI of the season putting him in fifth place for most RBIs in Triple-A. Gatewood is batting .292 in July with five home runs and 18 RBIs.

Infielder Gavin Cecchini was pulled up from the Rocket City Trash Pandas on July 8 and has been an absolute stud for the Bees. Cecchini wrapped up the Tacoma series with five hits on 16 at bats (.313) with a double, accounted for one run and reached base safely six times. Since Cecchini was added to the Bees lineup he has a .342 batting average, hit two doubles, 2 RBIs with a .405 OBP and a .395 slugging percentage.

Brandon Marsh got the call up to the Angels on July 18 and got his first MLB hit on July 19. Marsh had an incredible day with his first big league hit going three for four with a double and an RBI. Since suiting up with the Angels Marsh has played in three games and is hitting .364 with a .417 on base percentage

Jaime Barria picked up his third win of the season and pitched a complete game in the first game of the double header on Tuesday night. Barria pitched seven innings and allowed two runs on three hits while striking out three batters. The Bees won the first game of the double header 3-2, Barria is now 3-1 on the season.

Brian Johnson had a remarkable performance on Sunday and got his second win of the season. Johnson pitched eight innings and only gave up three hits with no runs and struck out five batters. Jose Quijada closed the game out in the ninth inning and preserved Johnson’s shutout without allowing a runner to reach base. The Bees won Sunday’s game 4-0 and Johsnon is now 2-1 on the season.

The Las Vegas Aviators are coming off a six game home series against the El Paso Chihuahuas. The Aviators won five of the six games and outscored the Chihuahuas 39-20. Las Vegas is third place in the West division of Triple-A West and has a 15-15 record on the road.

Las Vegas is bringing some swinging power to Smith’s Ballpark as the most extra base hits (40), second highest slugging percentage (.673) and the third most home runs (18) in Triple-A belong to the Outfielder Cody Thomas. He went six for 16 in the series vs. El Paso with two home runs, two doubles and four RBIs.

The first pitch of the series between the Salt Lake Bees and the Las Vegas Aviators gets underway at 6:35 pm @ Smith’s Ballpark and the last game of the series is Tuesday July 27 at 6:35 pm.
