Sugar Land, TX (7/13/21) – The Tacoma Rainiers (31-27) and the Sugar Land Skeeters (33-26) split their week-long series at Constellation Field at three games apiece, after the Skeeters outlasted the Rainiers 3-1 in a defensive struggle on Tuesday. Tacoma was limited to only four hits, as the clubs alternated wins over the six days.
Dillon Thomas kept the game scoreless through four innings when he robbed Bryan De La Cruz of a home run for the third out, leaping and extending over the wall in centerfield.
In the fifth however, the Skeeters drew first blood on Colton Shaver’s fourth homer of the year, a two-run shot to right-center. It was 3-0 Sugar Land in the sixth when De La Cruz struck back with a sac fly, which closed the book on Tacoma starter David Huff. The lefty went 5.1 IP, scattering five hits with five strikeouts. He did not walk a batter, the three runs were earned.
The Rainiers were held without a hit by right-hander Peter Solomon until the visiting sixth, before Jake Hager ripped a leadoff gap double and later scored on a wild pitch, trimming the Skeeters lead to 3-1. Solomon’s night ended at seven innings pitched, allowing only the one hit and an earned run. He struck out eight and walked one.
Sugar Land closer Ronel Blanco put two men on in the ninth with a walk of Hager and a Jose Marmolejos single, but clamped down to end it with a pair of strikeouts, his second save of the series and ninth of the season.
