SMITH HOMERS IN DEBUT AS GADES SPLIT DH

BROOKLYN, NY (June 9, 2021) – Josh Smith, the 14th-ranked prospect in the Yankees organization, hit a leadoff home run in the first inning to help the Hudson Valley Renegades to a 3-2 win over the Brooklyn Cyclones in game one of a doubleheader on Wednesday night. The Cyclones won the nightcap 5-3 at Maimonides Park.

The home run was hit in Smith’s first at-bat as a member of the Renegades.

Brooklyn tied the game in the second but the Gades took the lead back for good in the sixth on a two-run home run off the bat of Ezequiel Duran. The home run, the fifth of the year for Duran, put the Renegades up 3-1. The Cyclones rallied for a run in the bottom of the sixth and had the tying run on base but the Gades’ bullpen shut things down.

Tanner Myatt earned the win (1-0) while Justin Wilson picked up his first save. Justin Lasko took the loss for Brooklyn.

Hudson Valley started the second game on a strong note. In the second inning, a Frederick Cuevas double scored James Nelson from first. Kyle MacDonald then brought Cuevas home on a two-run homer and the Gades led 3-0.

The Cyclones scored three times in the fourth to take the lead and tacked on an extra run in the fifth. The Gades finished the night at 15-14 for the season, 4.5 games behind Aberdeen in High-A East North Division.

On the mound, Luis Medina took the loss to drop to 2-1 on the year. He went five innings, allowing five walks on seven hits, three walks, and four strikeouts.

The teams return to Maimonides Park tomorrow at 6:30 p.m.
