BURLINGTON, VT - The Lowell Spinners, proud affiliate of the 2018 World Series Champion Boston Red Sox, looked to bounce-back on Friday night after dropping the series opener against the Vermont Lake Monsters, Oakland Athletics short-season affiliate.
Noah Song, Red Sox 4th round draft selection out of the Naval Academy, got the start for the Spinners looking to extend his run of consecutive scoreless innings to begin his professional career. Unfortunately, that streak came to an end as Vermont jumped out on top early with a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning on a Jose Rivas RBI single.
Lowell got on the board in the top of the third inning on an Antoni Flores RBI single and took the lead on a two-run double by Cameron Cannon, who got the start at second base batting third in the order.
Nick Northcut added a two-run double in the 4th scoring Joe Davis and Jaxx Groshans after both singled, opening the score to 5-1 Lowell. That was the end of the night for Lake Monsters starter Yorlenis Noa as he departed with two runners in scoring position with zero outs. Austin Briggs entered the game for Vermont and immediately threw a wild pitch which allowed Nick Decker to score from third base. Marino Campana's RBI single made it 7-1 in the 4th.
Song was replaced by Yasel Santana after 3 innings of work allowing just two hits and a run walking and striking out a pair. Santana picked up his second win of the campaign logging 4 innings of relief while allowing just 3 hits and zero runs while striking out 5.
Brendan Cellucci worked the 8th and quickly surrendered 4 hits and 2 runs, but held the lead as the Spinners lead 7-3 going into the 9th.
Kris Jackson nailed down the save for the Spinners, his 7th of the campaign, as they improved to 36-30. Lowell takes on Vermont in the rubber match tomorrow evening in Burlington before coming home for six games, beginning on Sunday.
SATURDAY: The Spinners and Lake Monsters were locked in a scoreless pitchers duel on Saturday night in Vermont before Jordan Diaz opened the scoring in the 4th, giving Vermont the 1-0 lead.
Chris Murphy got the start for Lowell and went 3.1 innings allowing just one hit and one run (unearned) with two walks and two strikeouts. Miguel Suero locked down the middle innings with 3.2 scoreless innings of work allowing just two hits and striking out four.
Alex Erro got Lowell on the board in the top of the 7th with an RBI single, but Vermont quickly re-rook the lead in the bottom of the 8th thanks to a hit by Shane Selman.
It didn't take the Spinners long to answer as with Vermont looking to close out a win, Stephen Scott tied it up with a solo homer. Jonathan Diaz doubled shortly thereafter scoring Nick Northcut and giving the Spinners the 3-2 lead.
Osvaldo De La Rosa earned the victory and shut the door in the bottom of the 9th recording the final 5 outs without allowing a hit with a walk and strikeout on the ledger as well.
Lowell improved to 37-30 after taking the series in Vermont and return home to start a six-game homestand on Sunday with the Aberdeen Iron Birds, affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles. Magic number down to 4.
