Morgantown, WV -- Zach Warren provided 3.1 innings of shutout relief, but the offense stalled in the 3-1 loss to West Virginia Monday afternoon.

The Crosscutters offense got off to a similar start as they did in their win a day ago, in the sense that Nick Maton led off the game with a base hit to left field. Unfortunately, that Crosscutters would not be able to plate Maton in the frame.
West Virginia on the other hand, was able to jump out to an early lead in the 1st inning, getting a lead off double from Jared Oliva to spark the offense.
With Oliva at 3rd base, Deon Stafford lifted a sacrifice fly to center field, allowing Oliva to score ahead of a Malvin Matos throw to give the BlackBears an early 1-0 lead against Crosscutters starter David Parkinson.
Raul Siri ripped a one-out double to left field to give the BlackBears a scoring opportunity in the bottom of the 2nd inning. Jose Barraza cashed in on the opportunity, singling just over the leaping glove of Jesus Azuaje, to score Siri and add to the West Virginia lead at 2-0.
In the bottom of the 3rd inning, West Virginia was able to add one more run against Parkinson, as Bligh Madris was hit by a Parkinson offering with the bases loaded to score Jared Oliva and give the BlackBears a 3-0 lead.
The right-hander out of Ole Miss was able to leave the bases loaded in the bottom of the 3rd inning, getting the Cutters to the plate.
Malvin Matos led off the Crosscutters 4th inning with a base hit, giving the Cutters their second lead off man aboard in the contest.
After Matos stole 2nd base and moved to 3rd on a ground out by Greg Pickett, Ike Schlabach uncorked a wild pitch to allowed Matos to walk home from 3rd to get the Crosscutters on the board.
Williamsport would leave runners on 1st and 2nd in the inning, trailing 3-1 heading to the bottom of the 4th inning.
Parkinson answered with a three-up-three-down inning in the bottom of the 4th, the only clean frame that he would toss in the outing, as he would not be able to work through the bottom of the 5th.
Zach Warren entered in relief with runners on the corners and two outs in the bottom of the 5th inning. Warren was able to get Raul Siri to ground into a fielder's choice, seeing Bligh Madris retired at 2nd base for the final out of the frame.
That was only the beginning for Warren, who would retire the next six batters that he would face. Needing just 13 pitches to work through his first 2.1 innings of relief. The University of Tennessee product would finish with 3.1 innings of shutout relief, allowing just one base hit and striking out three on just 24 pitches.
Outside of a Jake Scheiner lead off double in the top of the 7th inning, the Crosscutters did not threaten the rest of the way against West Virginia relievers Yoandy Fernandez and Joel Cesar, who combined to throw four shutout innings of relief, allowing just one hit and strike out five as they closed the door on the Cutters.
The Crosscutters conclude their three-game series against the BlackBears tomorrow afternoon, with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m. At Monogalia County Ballpark.
Cutter Carvings - The BlackBears took the regular season series against the Crosscutters, getting their seventh win of the series... After pounding out 15 hits a night ago, the Crosscutters were held to just five this afternoon... Nick Maton was the only Crosscutters hitter to collect a multi-hit game...
