Omaha’s offense comes alive in return to Werner Park

Pasquantino went 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs and Hicklen launched his 28th homer

PAPILLION, Neb. – First baseman Vinnie Pasquantino picked up where he left off, earning another multi-RBI game inside of Werner Park. The Storm Chasers opened the series against the Indianapolis Indians with an 8-7 win. The Storm Chasers lead the series 1-0 while the season series is tied 6-6.

Indianapolis got on the board first, scoring a pair of runs in the opening frame. Bligh Madres hit a sacrifice fly to start the scoring before a Kevin Padlo gave the Indians a 2-0 lead.

Omaha responded in the bottom of the first, with Pasquantino hitting an RBI double to put the Storm Chasers on the board. Pasquantino would come in and score on a couple of wild pitches. Right fielder Brewer Hicklen launched his team-leading 28th home run of the season to give the Storm Chasers the lead after the first inning.

Ji-hwan Bae knotted the score with a groundout and Diego Castillo hit into a fielder’s choice that gave the Indians the lead back 4-3.

Designated hitter Gabriel Cancel hit an RBI to score center fielder Dairon Blanco before shortstop Maikel Garcia hit sacrifice fly to plate another run. Right fielder Edward Olivares pushed another Storm Chasers run across the dish and Pasquantino recorded another RBI to make the score 7-4 through two innings of play.

Indianapolis cut into the deficit with a solo home run from Carter Bins in the fourth to put Omaha’s lead at two runs.

Blanco hit a single to score Hicklen and give the Storm Chasers an 8-5 advantage in the fifth inning.

Left-hander Marcelo Martinez (Win, 5-5) would go 5.0 innings, allowing five runs (three earned runs) with four strikeouts.

Right-handers Gabe Speier, Yefri Del Rosario, and Andrés Sotillet each threw scoreless innings out of the bullpen for the Storm Chasers. Right-hander Ándres Núñez allowed a pair of runs in the ninth but held on to earn his third save in his last three games and finish the 8-7 win.

Omaha and Indianapolis will play game two and three tomorrow with a doubleheader. First pitch for the opener is set for 5:05 p.m. with coverage starting at 4:45 p.m. on the on the Sarpy County Tourism Pregame Show on 1180 The Zone. Game two will take place approximately 30 minutes after the end of the first game.

Tomorrow’s game is a Winning Wednesday, presented by Nebraska Spine Hospital. If the Storm Chasers win game two, fans in attendance at the end of the game will receive a free ticket for the Thursday, September 22 game against the Iowa Cubs.
