ONTARIO, Calif. – Easton Shelton has grabbed the spotlight as the California League Player of the Month for June, and he earned it in style. The 20-year-old first baseman crushed the ball for the Ontario Tower Buzzers, putting up a .329 batting average with a .460 on-base percentage and a wild .722 slugging percentage. Nobody in the league matched his power this past month. He led the league with nine home runs, 27 RBIs, that .722 slugging mark, and an eye-popping 1.182 OPS. He was also second in on-base percentage, third in total bases, and drew 18 walks, good for fourth.
Shelton was steady game after game, racking up nine multi-hit performances in June. He had his first professional multi-homer game on June 6 against Stockton, a big night that fueled Ontario’s already impressive offense.
All season long, Shelton has anchored Ontario’s lineup. He’s delivered power, plate discipline, and plenty of run production right in the heart of the order. His huge June run played a huge part in the Buzzers’ surge in the California League’s second-half race, and he’s quickly become one of Single-A’s top bats.
Originally from Las Vegas, Shelton signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers as an undrafted free agent out of Bishop Gorman High School last August. He’s now the second straight Ontario player to pick up Player of the Month honors this year. Third baseman Chase Harlan took home the award for May.
Shelton’s recognition adds to an exciting first season for Ontario, making it clear: this team is building something special with young talent leading the way.
