Five-Run Sixth Pushes Quakes Past Tower Buzzers, 10-7

ONTARIO, Calif. —The Ontario Tower Buzzers held a slim lead heading into the sixth inning Wednesday night, but things unraveled fast. Rancho Cucamonga exploded for five runs in that frame and cruised past Ontario, 10-7, at ONT Field.
Ontario put together 11 hits and got homers from Ching-Hsien Ko and Oswaldo Osorio. The Quakes just kept coming, though; the visitors racked up 15 hits and pounded out seven runs between the sixth and seventh innings to flip the script.
Ko wasted no time getting Ontario on the board, launching his 21st home run of the year in the opening inning.
Rancho answered with runs in the second and third. Ontario punched right back in their half of the third; Joendry Vargas brought in Javier Herrera with a single, and Caleb Johnson’s sac fly made it 3-2, Ontario.
Rancho pulled even in the fourth, but Ontario’s Jose Gonzalez and Kyeler Thompson led off the bottom of the inning with back-to-back triples. Thompson’s first triple in the California League drove in Gonzalez for a 4-3 lead.
Marlon Nieves started on the mound for Ontario, tossing four innings and giving up three runs (two earned) on five hits, while fanning seven and walking three.
Brady Pendley held the line with a scoreless fifth. But then Dailoui Abad took over for the sixth, and everything changed. Rancho strung together five hits in that inning. Gavin Grahovac’s three-run homer to right was the dagger. Gabriel Davalillo knocked in another, and suddenly the Quakes were out front, 8-4.
The Quakes weren't done as they tacked on two more in the seventh, thanks to Jonathan Linares’ two-run single, stretching their lead to six.
Ontario didn’t roll over. Osorio scored on a wild pitch in the seventh and then provided the big blow in the ninth, a two-run homer to right, his 12th of the year, after Vargas reached on an error. That cut the deficit to 10-7.
Gonzalez kept the ninth alive with a single, but Marco Vega closed things out for Rancho.
Osorio was locked in all night, going 3-for-3 with two walks, a homer, two RBI, and two runs scored. Ko finished with two hits and two runs, while Gonzalez tallied two hits (including a triple) and scored once.
Jholbran Herder kept Ontario in it with two scoreless innings out of the bullpen, striking out three and surrendering just one hit.
Rancho Cucamonga has now taken the first two games of the six-game series. Ontario and Rancho get back at it Thursday night at ONT Field.
