San Jose, Calif. – The Ontario Tower Buzzers wrapped up an impressive road swing Sunday night, storming back from an early hole to beat the San Jose Giants 8-4. With that win, they locked up a five-games-to-one series victory at Excite Ballpark.
Things didn’t look so rosy at first. Ontario jumped out front in the third when Oswaldo Osorio ripped a double, and Mairo Martinus crushed his 14th homer of the year, a two-run shot to left. But San Jose bounced back right away.
Ontario’s starter Jack O’Connor tossed two scoreless innings in his debut, but once Will Gagnon came in, things unraveled fast. The Giants put up four runs, Jeremiah Jenkins laced a two-run double, Fernando Gonzalez followed with an RBI double, and a wild pitch brought home the fourth. Suddenly, San Jose led 4-2.
Ontario didn’t blink. They just kept chipping away and then turned it on. The big moment came in the sixth when Joendry Vargas got on base thanks to a throwing error. Javier Herrera knocked him in to make it 4-3, then Osorio demolished a two-run homer to center, flipping the lead back to Ontario for good.
From there, the Tower Buzzers took over. Herrera singled home another run in the seventh after Tunink, and Vargas reached safely, making it 6-4. In the eighth, Easton Shelton drove in Martinus, and Herrera got plunked with the bases loaded to force home one more insurance run. The offense finished with 11 hits.
The bullpen deserves a shoutout, too. Jholbran Herder came in with two runners on in the fifth and whiffed Oliver Tejada to escape trouble. He set down seven of the next eight hitters, covering 2.1 scoreless frames for his fourth win. Jose Vasquez took care of a scoreless eighth, then Jecsua Liborius shut the door with three strikeouts in the ninth.
All told, Ontario’s arms racked up 17 strikeouts, one of their top marks this year. O’Connor punched out three in his two innings, Gagnon struck out six, Herder fanned four, Vasquez one, and Liborius finished up with three.
Martinus led the way at the plate, going 3-for-6 with a homer, a double, two RBIs, and two runs. Herrera finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs, Osorio went 2-for-5 with a double and a blast, and Shelton, Tunink, and Conner O’Neal each chipped in a hit as well.
After going 5-1 in San Jose, the Buzzers head home with serious momentum, closing out one of their best road series of the season.
