Nelson Figueroa Signs With Diamondbacks

January 11, 2013

After pitching the PawSox to their first Governors' Cup championship in nearly three decades, Nelson Figueroa has signed with the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Figueroa, 38, has nine years of Major League experience and previously pitched for Arizona as a rookie in 2000. Signed as a minor league free agent by Boston in late July after being released by the Yankees, the right-hander was the most dominating pitcher in the International League during the playoffs by going 2-0, 1.29 ERA with one walk and 13 strikeouts over 14.0 innings pitched.

Figueroa earned the win in the PawSox championship-clinching victory in Charlotte and was also the winning pitcher when Pawtucket topped Scranton/Wilkes-Barre for a wild card berth and later the semi-finals win.

Ironically, the veteran will likely start the season with Triple-A Reno -- the club he allowed six runs to over a season-low two innings in the Gildan Triple-A National Championship Game in Durham, NC.
