Ports Outlast Mavericks For 2-1 Win In 13

STOCKTON, Calif. - On a night where few runs were scored over many innings, the Stockton Ports pulled out a hard-fought win to open their six-game home stand. The Ports scored a run in the first and a run in the 13th to defeat the High Desert Mavericks by a final of 2-1 at Banner Island Ballpark, earning their third straight victory.

The Ports put an early run across in the bottom of the first. Antonio Lamas singled to right with one out and two batters later, B.A. Vollmuth reached on a throwing error committed by Mavericks third baseman Pat Kivlehan. With runners at the corners and two out, High Desert starter Jordan Pries balked and Lamas was awarded home plate to give the Ports a 1-0 lead.

Pries would go on to escape a jam at the third where the Ports had runners at the corners and nobody out. The right-hander received a no-decision after allowing an unearned run on four hits while striking out three.

Ports starter Raul Alcantara allowed just one hit and struck out seven over the first four innings. In the fifth, Nate Melendres doubled with one out and went to third on a passed ball charged to catcher Bruce Maxwell. David Villasuso followed with a sac-fly to center that scored Melendres and tied the game at 1-1.

Alcantara went on to receive a no-decision as he went 6.2 innings and allowed just the unearned run on two hits while setting a new season-high with nine strikeouts.

Grady Wood came on in relief of Pries to start the sixth and went four shutout innings, allowing just two hits while recording three strikeouts.

Blake Hassebrock came on in relief of Alcantara and pitched 2.1 scoreless innings for the Ports. Seth Frankoff followed with two scoreless innings and recorded five strikeouts. Omar Duran (1-0) came on in the 12th and pitched two perfect innings while recording three strikeouts to earn the victory.

Matt Brazis came on to pitch the 10th in relief of Wood and pitched two scoreless innings, working out of a bases-loaded jam with two outs in the 10th to push the game into the 11th.

Seon Gi Kim (4-4) entered the game in the 12th and set the side down in order in his first inning of relief. In the 13th, however, Kim allowed a leadoff triple to Max Muncy. After issuing back-to-back intentional walks to Vollmuth and Tony Thompson, Phil Pohl came up and hit a sac-fly to deep center to score Muncy and give the Ports the victory.

The Ports will look to with their fourth straight as they play the second game of their three-game series with the Mavericks on Sunday night at Banner Island Ballpark. Josh Bowman (3-2, 6.16 ERA) makes the start for Stockton, opposed by High Desert right-hander Stephen Landazuri (4-3, 4.58 ERA). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. PDT.
