Toribio slams first homer in 6-3 win over Baysox

RICHMOND, Va. – The Richmond Flying Squirrels topped the Bowie Baysox, 6-3, on Wednesday night at The Diamond to pick up their fourth consecutive win.

RICHMOND, Va. – The Richmond Flying Squirrels topped the Bowie Baysox, 6-3, on Wednesday night at The Diamond to pick up their fourth consecutive win.

A go-ahead homer by Luis Toribio put the Flying Squirrels (9-8) ahead for good and the bullpen closed out the Baysox (9-8) over the final innings.

With the score tied, 3-3, entering the bottom of the sixth, Carter Howell reached on an infield single to lead off the inning. With two outs, Toribio launched a two-run homer to center, his first at Double-A, to put Richmond ahead, 5-3.

In the bottom of the eighth, Howell led off with a double, his third hit of the game, and Vaun Brown brought him in with a sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 6-3.

Nick Garcia (Save, 2) worked around a pair of errors in the top of the ninth to strand the potential tying run on base, lowering his season ERA to 1.80.

The Baysox opened the scoring in the first inning. Dylan Beavers led off the game with a single and moved to third on an fielding error. Jud Fabian brought him to score to give the Baysox a 1-0 lead.

In the bottom of the third, Will Wilson tied the game with a two-out, RBI single.

Two batters later, Howell brought in two runs with a double to give Richmond a 3-1 lead.

John Rhodes hit an RBI double in the fourth and tied the game with a solo homer in the sixth inning.

Ryan Murphy worked five innings and allowed two runs (one earned) in his start, lowering his season ERA to 2.12.

Reggie Crawford (Win, 1-0) made his third Double-A appearance and allowed hit, the solo homer by Rhodes, and struck out two batters. Nick Swiney struck out four batters over two scoreless innings.

Howell finished the night 3-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored.

The series continues on Thursday night at The Diamond. Right-hander Matt Frisbee (0-1, 6.52) will start for Richmond countered by Bowie right-hander Ryan Long (0-1, 6.00). First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. at The Diamond.
