Four Ducks Selected to '17 EL All-Star Team
All first-time EL All-Stars, headed to New Hampshire for RubberDucks
(AKRON, OHIO) June 28, 2017 - The Eastern League named four Akron RubberDucks to the Western Division roster today for the 2017 Northeast Delta Dental Eastern League All-Star Game when it announced full-squad rosters. The New Hampshire Fisher Cats in will host the game on July 12, with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m. The annual game showcases the top talent and prospects of the respective teams represented in the Eastern League.
Shortstop Yu Chang, right-handed pitcher Cameron Hill , catcher Francisco Mejia , and left-handed pitcher Thomas Pannone were selected by voting conducted by league managers, media members, and fans. Mejia and Pannone were selected through the league sponsored, fan voting. All four RubberDucks are first-time EL All-Stars.
Chang, 21, has put on a power display during his first season with the RubberDucks, leading the team in home runs with 17, which is tied for 3rd in the EL. He also is 5th in the EL in extra-base hits with 32. Chang is hitting .217 on the season with 44 RBI, which is 2nd on the team and has scored a team-high 37 runs.
Hill, 23, has been the RubberDucks most reliable reliever this season. In 20 appearances, Hill has logged 41.2 innings posting a team bullpen low 2.38 ERA. He has struck out 30 and has converted on all three save situations. He ranks 5th in the EL in fewest base runners allowed per nine innings.
Mejia, 21, is the Cleveland Indians top prospect according to Baseball America. He currently leads the EL in hitting with a .352 batting average, ranks 2nd in slugging (.592) and ranks 3rd in on-base percentage (.396). On the year, he has totaled 16 doubles, 31 RBI and 34 runs. He was named EL player of the week for June 5-11 in which he hit .609 (14-for-23), with 3 2B, 5 HR, 10 RBI, 7 R, in a five-game span. On June 18, Mejia delivered a pinch-hit, walk-off double to beat the Portland Sea Dogs 3-2 at Canal Park. Additionally, Mejia is hitting .409 with RISP (18-for-44) with 3 HR, 23 RBI, and .489 vs. LHP's (23-for-47) with 3 HR, 10 RBI.
Pannone, 23, is 3-1 with a 2.01 ERA in nine starts with Akron. In 53.2 innings, the lefthander has struck out 48 and posted a 0.99 WHIP. Since being called up to Akron on May 5 from Single-A Advanced Lynchburg, Pannone has been one of Akron's most effective starters. At Lynchburg, Pannone won Carolina League Player of the Month for April, going 1-0, posting a 0.00 ERA in 20.2 innings with 31 strikeouts.
